On this date 30 years ago...
Richard Nixon resigns.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nixon said "I am not a crook".
To the world these are his most remembered words.
Bush's most remembered words will probably be "Bring it On !".
I would have guessed....
Ask NOT *what* your country can do for you - but *what* YOU can do for
your country!
-JFK
That's JFK-Kennedy not Kerry......for those Americans WH always refers
to.
If they exist! ;)
And since he died the year I was born, it has been drilled into my head
Welcome back!
Bush has produced more idiotic quotes then any other prez, to my
knowledge. It's scarey to think about ... but when you do it's almost like
Al Qaeda saw the opportunity of the U.S. having a complete idiot sitting
in power when they struck. They're timing couldn't have been better. They
were obviously paying close attention to GW. I'd be surprised if they
haven't indirectly contributed to his reelection fund.
Ah ... the smokes.
First, I was smoking approx. 1/2 pack ( 12 to 15 ) per day.
I'm doing the patch. I used the 14 mg for 2 weeks then dropped myself down
to 7 mg. One more week on 7 mg then done-diddily-done.
I just finished off a pack at 10:00 one evening and went grocery shopping
with my kids the next morning. Instead of butts, I bought a pack of
patches instead.
A year ago last January I went cold turkey for 6 weeks. Considering the
way things were going at work and home I'm surprised I lasted that long.
It got easier as far as the cravings went, but they were a ***** at first.
I had a buddy at work quit along with me, so it was basicly staying
'clean' on my own in the mornings and evenings. Stress ended up doing me
in and convinced me to start up again.
Almost 4 years ago I had quit for 6 months. Used the patches for 6 weeks
at the beginning. That was a breeze. I started back up thinking I could
have 'just one'. I kicked myself in the ***** for that stupidity. Dropping
down a level or finishing up with the patch will cause a days worth of
discomfort then it's done.
Nicotine takes about 2 or 3 days to get out of your system. But there's a
ton of other chemicals they put in cigarettes to keep you coming back too.
That's why I went back to the patch this time. Someone here mentioned
alt.support.stop-smoking as a decent group for quitting ... and it is.
It's great.
HTH!
Nicotine might be good for you. Pharmacologists have noted that
nicotine enhances memory and attention, and helps those with
Parkinson's, schizophrenia, and depression. They are trying to come up
with nicotine-like drugs, since nicotine has few side effects.
But smoking is bad. One can eat three quarters of a cigarette a day,
like I do, or just use smokeless tobacco. You use a patch. Susan uses
Nicorette (sp?). Maybe I'll try to stop using cigarettes. Anyway,
here's an interesting article about how smokeless tobacco would almost
eliminate so many deadly diseases for those who use tobacco, but
Actually Nicorette (the brand name) is very expensive so I use the
it is a drug there is no outrageous taxes on it like there is on cigs.
Great with your morning coffee! :)
Nicotine Patch May Aid Memory
LOS ANGELES TIMES
December 30, 2003
For many years, doctors have tried to harness the memory-enhancing
powers of nicotine without exposing people to the carcinogenic
chemicals in cigarette smoke. A nicotine patch may be the answer.
Several studies have shown that nicotine can improve attentiveness
among patients with attention deficit disorders, schizophrenia,
Parkinson's disease and mild to moderate Alzheimer's. Now, a small
study from Duke University researchers suggests that low-dose nicotine
patches might relieve the mildest form of memory loss, a common
condition called age-associated memory impairment - often referred to
as "senior moments."
The study of 11 nonsmoking patients ages 60 to 90 found that four
weeks of wearing a nicotine patch halved the time it took them to make
decisions on a standardized memory test. They scored better on
standard measures of mental focus and attentiveness, while reporting
improved memory.
The low-dose nicotine patch worked without such side effects as
increased heart rate, blood pressure and weight loss, all of which are
associated with higher doses. One participant dropped out because of
nausea.
Nicotine, the study demonstrated, can improve memory and attention
even at the earliest stages of memory loss, said co-author Edward D.
Levin, a behavioral pharmacologist. It might even slow mental decline.
But people having difficulty recalling simple facts, such as names or
phone numbers, shouldn't rush out to buy the patch, experts say.
Nicotine is only FDA-approved for smoking cessation, and the long-term
safety of nicotine patches hasn't been proven in large studies.
Levin also cautioned against smoking because cigarettes' health risks
far outweigh nicotine's benefits.
The findings, published in an online edition of the journal
Psychopharmacology and awaiting publication in the printed version,
suggest that nicotine-like drugs being developed by several
pharmaceutical companies might provide a similar memory-boosting
benefit.
