The Pseudoscience of Intelligent Design Kuro5hin.org
May 2, 2005
The Dover, Pennsylvania school board recently adopted a policy requiring
that
high school science teachers teaching evolution tell their students that
evolutionary theory, a theory that has been shown to explain the origins of
life time and time again, is flawed, and that intelligent design is a valid
alternative. The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union), along with the AUSCS
(Americans United for the Separation of Church and State), and 11 parents,
are
suing the school board, accusing the board of violating the separation of
church and state (Banerjee A16). They are quite right. The sole purpose of
"Intelligent Design" is to make creationism look like a scientifically
credible
theory, so that it can be perpetuated in public schools, among other places.
Intelligent Design, however, is not supported by scientific evidence, and is
invalid as a scientific theory.
To understand the problems with Intelligent Design, first it is important to
understand the theory it is attempting to oppose, evolution by natural
selection. The theory is this: If organisms reproduce, offspring inherit
traits
from their progenitor(s), a variability of traits exists, and the
environment
cannot sustain all the members of an increasingly large population, then
those
members of the population that have poorly-adapted traits (to their
environment) will die out, and those with well-adapted traits (to their
environment) will prosper (Darwin 459). Over a long period of time, this
process leads to extreme complexity, and adaptedness.

What's your point, bitchtits? Do you think it was weaponised Marburg
manufactured by Saddam from his gaol cell?
''gaol cell?''
That is not a typo :)
Nope, it's the correct spelling. As you might have known if your brainstem
had developed into an actual brain.

You just slammed me as a illiterate - lol.
...and you just confirmed it, you braindead fucking fool. Thanks!

How is it flawed? I'm not aware of anything found to contradict it,
unlike Einstein's theory of relativity, which doesn't hold in certain
situations.
Sounds like yet another case of rules being made by those who don't

serious examination.

Isn't taht always the case when the uber-religious get involved in ANYTHING

Stat is from Iran, don't forget. No doubt his teacher was heavily
influenced by religion. I had an otherwise intelligent Muslim from Pakistan
tell me that, in his opinion, dinosaurs never existed because they are not
mentioned in the Koran. He told me that people made them up to make money.
I told him that, with the exception of Hollywood types like Steven
Speilberg, no one ever got rich because of dinosaurs! In fact, the idea of
tediously cleaning off fossils at a hot, dusty dig does not sound to
appealing to me!

Nah, fundementalist Christians tend to believe that man lived at the same
time as dinosaurs, since the earth is only 6000 or so years old. Just as
ludicrous indeed.
My point was not to get in a "daily swipe" at Islam!

Actually, you're both right.
Schools were mostly secular. The one I went to, theology was one of the
12 or 14 subjects we took each year. They were mostly fairly pleasant
courses. Not much homework. Just some reading before exams and
memorizing some stuff here and there. Looking back, I think it was one
of the more useful subjects I took. It didn't make me a devout Muslim or
a particularly religious person. But allowed me to get a peek into
religious thought from differing points of view. We had a different
teacher each year who more or less followed his or her own outlook and
approach to religion. Some very progressive, others quite radical, and
everything in between. I can tell you a ton of funny and strange stories
about those days.
But the Darwin story was not related to these classes. It was I think a
course in world history. The teacher was somehow a religious man, but he
didn't teach theology.
He was particularly proud of Eastern civilizations, and the monkey
comment was a humorous reference back to earlier lessons comparing the
state of the world in the East and the West, say between the years
1500BC to 1500AD. He pretended (jokingy) that he could fully understand
and agree with Darwin's findings and conclusions, as long as we apply
them to Darwin himself and Westerners in general, but found them quite
irrelevant for himself and other Easterners... At the time (and still
today) I get a chuckle when I think of that comment. I guess you have to
be Iranian to see the humor in this ;-)
