Yup, the reaction to shining a light onto what's wrong *does* have a temporary
impact on those who haven't done wrong. That's a very unfortunate side
effect, but it certainly doesn't mean that the right thing to do is keep your
mouth shut and let abuses continue unchecked. The way these people are moaning
and groaning, you'd think they'd *prefer* that rapes, tortures, murders, and the
like be allowed to continue instead of investigated and stopped. They seem to
want the US military of having a reputation of following Stalin's model.
I don't happen to agree with that mindset. I'm sorry they were put through hell
because a small minority of their fellow soldiers were behaving in a barbaric
way, but it's never a Good Thing to allow abuses to occur in the name of the US
military. I should think they'd have found it equally horrifying and worthy of
scrutiny so that it could be eliminated, rather than bemoaning the fact that it
was not allowed to continue.
