Having listened to various experts discuss oil, the argument goes
there is about 40-50 years worth left.
Problem more people are getting cars and lifestyles, so less oil to go
around, given that growth it is then only a matter of years before the
grab for Oil becomes more blatant, and yes rationing will probably
start in about 5 years if we live peacefully till then, if not well
the oilfields become the biggest target for terrorists and rogue
nations the more you waste the more valuable this resource becomes.

Leigh, I generally like your posts, but I really wish you'd use a
period every once in a while.
As to the substance, I think dependence on oil is the most important
economic and environmental problem the U.S. currently faces.
Reasons to move away from dependence on oil:
Environment: when the north of Russia is suddenly traversable by ship,
and when huge ice shelves are falling into the ocean, I'd say it's a
good time to start taking global warming more seriously.
Dependency on Foreign Powers: I would so love to be able to tell
Saudi Arabia to take their oil and...well you get the idea. Without
oil, of what value are any of the Middle Eastern nations?
Increasing demand and quickly diminishing limited supply: About when
will we start to realize that our trucks wont run forever? 5 years
from now? How long will it take for the U.S. economy to switch from
oil-based energy to some not-yet-discovered-or-decided source?
Reasons not to move away from oil:
A good friend of mine told me the story of Japan's entrance into WWII.
He said they were forced to war, because of the invention of Nylon.
Before Nylon, Japanese silk was in high demand and was Japan's single
enormous export. Nylon threatened to destroy the Japanese economy.
Something to keep in mind before telling the Saudis to put a smipe in
their cork and poke it...
How will the Bushes stay rich??

period every once in a while.
Point taken!
As to the substance, I think dependence on oil is the most important
economic and environmental problem the U.S. currently faces.
Reasons to move away from dependence on oil:
Running out and continuiety of supply.
Environment: when the north of Russia is suddenly traversable by ship,
and when huge ice shelves are falling into the ocean, I'd say it's a
good time to start taking global warming more seriously.
For anyone to notice, it would have to be tsunamis up the lawn.
Dependency on Foreign Powers: I would so love to be able to tell
Saudi Arabia to take their oil and...well you get the idea. Without
oil, of what value are any of the Middle Eastern nations?
But when it is in your interest to take the resource, and you still
have to get it out of the area, it becomes a major problem getting it
back to a refinery etc.
How long will it take for the U.S. economy to switch from
oil-based energy to some not-yet-discovered-or-decided source?
If you think about it rail has to come to the fore in the interim but
I cannot see a global fleet, changing so quickly, so rationing and
mass people movers, unless you use coal or shale oil to energise the
system somehow.
Reasons not to move away from oil:
SNIP
Nylon threatened to destroy the Japanese economy.
Something to keep in mind before telling the Saudis to put a smipe in
their cork and poke it...
Still going to have to face up to your supplier, one way or the other.
How will the Bushes stay rich??

Maybe that is why, they are trying to secure as much global oil as
possible, so when it does get short, they will have a stash, but that
is where rogue elements come in, either to steal or destroy it.

Why do you think the push is on for America to steal it all from other
countries?
