One-quarter of all Americans met the criteria for having a mental
illness within the past year, and fully a quarter of those had a
"serious" disorder that significantly disrupted their ability to
function day to day, according to the largest and most detailed survey
of the nation's mental health, published yesterday.
Although parallel studies in 27 other countries are not yet complete,
the new numbers suggest that the United States is poised to rank No. 1
globally for mental illness, researchers said.

About half of Americans will develop a mental disorder at some time in
their lives, the survey of nearly 10,000 U.S. adults found - with half
of those cases starting by age 14, and three-quarters by age 24.

The Curse of Tecumseh

Grossly inaccurate article. The phrase "exhaustive government study" that costs $20,000,000 pretty
much sums it up. The greedy bastards in the mental health system created a bottomless pit during the
"90's. So much of what's written in the article is false. Mr Insel is an excellent example. Every
single double blind study has shown talk therapy to be as effective as medication. In fact, seeing a
profesional MH therapist is only marginally more effective than chatting with a friend or minister.
The MH system in the USA is currupt. What was considered a "bad day" 20 years ago is now
pathological. The majority of anxiety issues fall into the catagory of adjustment disorders. Most
can be addressed in 2-5 sessions. A savvy mental health counselor will turn those 2-5 sessions into
a year's worth of therapy............or until the insurance runs out. Which ever comes first.
A good "for insistance" is the diagnosis, multiple personality disorder. No where else in the world
can it be found..........outside of the USA. Gee, ain't that interesting. We've got a mental system
in this country that's completely out of control and very inefficient.

I am quite sure more than a quarter of the US government meet the criteria
aswell.

Yes it can. I remember our high school vice principal Mr. Alfonzo
Taylor would come into the science lab with a fired up blow torch and
he'd be squealing like a pig. The room enptied thru the door in less
than 15 seconds.

Absolutely Uncle Wally. HOOROO to all.
Cosmic Geology is my hobby. I remember
when I fetched my first Mars rock from a
pawn shop in lower Manhattan in 1964 for
$10 (US) and he threw in (for free) a book on
collecting for the serious cosmic geologist.
I later sold my memory RAM chip with all of
my cosmic geology items, thoughts and activites
to Mr. Robert Zimmerman for $50
(Canadian).
