German TV may see 'sperm race' reality show
27 July 2004
AMSTERDAM - Dutch television and multimedia company Endemol has
announced
plans to produce two controversial reality programmes, with the
self-explanatory titles Sperm Race and Make me a Mum, with the former to
be
shown on German TV.
Endemol - a Netherlands-based company with international subsidiaries -
has
almost completed negotiations in Germany for Sperm Race, in which a
German
adjudged to have the best sperm will win a sports car.
But the second show, Make me a Mum - which Endemol is discussing with
British
and US television stations - will go a step further, newspaper De
Telegraaf
reported on Tuesday.
This six-part series involves men battling it out for the main prize:
being
given the opportunity to make several women pregnant. The artificial
insemination will even be televised live.
Endemol claims that Make me a Mum is a battle between normal physical
attraction on the one side and science and biology on the other. It says
the
show will be both entertaining and investigative.
A company spokeswoman admitted to Expatica that Endemol has encountered
media
concerns about its plans, but claims it is only investigating the
possibility
of making the programmes and has therefore not breached any ethical or
moral
boundaries.
It is not yet known when the programmes will appear on TV and the
spokeswoman
said further announcements will be made when negotiations have been
finalised.
Endemol has not yet issued a call for would-be participants to register
their
interest.
Questioned if Endemol is just trying to win good ratings, the
spokeswoman was
quick to confirm that the company is always interested in making
programmes
that attract good viewing figures. She said the two shows could loosen
the
public's tongue.
The Endemol company was established in 1994 by a merger between Joop van
den
Ende TV-Producties and John de Mol Produkties, and includes Big Brother
among
its titles.
Its headquarters is in Hilversum and it has subsidiaries and joint
ventures in
about 20 other countries. Since 2000, it has been part of telecoms firm
Telefonica S.A., the largest supplier of telecom and internet services
in the
Spanish and Portuguese-speaking world.
Must be European inferiority surfacing following the Tour de France. Guess
they got to win at
something.
Q) What's better than winning the Tour De France?
A) Having a pair of functioning nuts
