'Monster' terrorized 3 Massachusetts kids
19-year-old gets 20 years for sex, psycho abuse
June 11, 2005
Following courtroom testimony that sounded like the script of a
Hollywood horror movie, a bespectacled 19-year-old was sentenced to 20
years in jail and 20 years of special parole for the sexual and
psychological abuse of three Massachusetts children.
Jeremy Barney was described as a manipulative monster for the 18
months of abuse he inflicted on three young children.
The parents of two boys and a girl who were between the ages of 6 and
13 in 2003 described the horrors the family continues to endure.
"There have been flashbacks, nightmares, shrieking and begging to go
to the hospital," said the mother of the victims, who wasn't
identified to protect the identity of her young children. "There have
been fears, and nightmares and flashbacks. My 8-year-old daughter
begged me to please let her kill herself. "
The young woman described how difficult it has been to mend such deep
wounds. Her children are rarely able to attend school, and often need
clinical help just to get through the day.
It is now a full-time job to be near her troubled children, who depend
on her, counselors and a dozen prescribed medications just to get
through the day. Nightly, she said, new details about what happened in
their former home for 18 months beginning in 2002 are still being
revealed.
The father of the children said Barney manipulated his way into the
family's trust as a baby sitter who watched the children after school
and before the parents returned home from work.
Barney raped and subjected each child to psychological abuse and
intimidation, according to court documents. He also used instruments
to violate them with, and cut their genital areas with glass.
"He is a soulless, heartless psychopath, a master of manipulation,"
the father said following a tearful embrace with his wife. "He
safety-pinned the paws of our cat to the carpet while he sexually
assaulted the cat so as to preserve their silence. He used the same
instrument of sexual assault on our dog as he used on my daughter. And
the dog is still incontinent. We need to lock this monster up and lose
the key."
Assistant State's Attorney James Fletcher said the case was the first
in his 15 years as a prosecutor in which the probation officer who
conducted a background investigation recommended a lengthy jail term
without probation.
"Any healing won't come for a very long time," Fletcher said. "This
has left the children broken and struggling on a daily basis."
Fletcher said the crimes were revealed after one of the children
needed counseling. A pattern was then revealed and stories were
confirmed by pediatric examinations. While the children suffered,
Fletcher said, Barney's school performance remained good as a student
with higher than average intelligence.
"He used his intelligence to manipulate and terrorize the children so
they wouldn't disclose the abuse," he said.
Barney's attorney, Stephen Somerstein, said Barney was a troubled
young boy who was himself the victim of sexual abuse as an
11-year-old. He needs help, Somerstein said, not a jail sentence that
will leave him a hardened criminal unable to function in society.
When asked to speak, Barney stuttered and was helped to his feet by
marshals. He referred to one of his victims as a defendant, then
apologized for the error. He began blaming the victim, but stopped
speaking in mid-sentence when his attorney pulled him from a standing
to a sitting position. To investigators, Barney said the sex was
consensual.
The victims left their home in Sharon on the recommendation of
counselors who suggested the familiarity of the environment where
Barney caused so much harm would continue to haunt the children. They
now live in another Northwest Corner town.
The youth began abusing the children in the summer of 2002, when he
began watching pornographic videos with the eldest child, a boy who
was then 12, the warrant said. He eventually abused all three
children, the state police charged. He intimidated the children by
telling them he would assault other members of the family if they did
not comply with his requests, and he tortured them with a knife, among
other items, the warrant said.
The victims' mother, who was not identified in the warrant, told the
police "basically every time we had Jeremy baby-sit, he raped'' the
two older children, the warrant said.
After he was released from the hospital in Torrington, the youth went
to live with his aunt in Everson, Wash., and he was arrested there in
January. Earlier this month, he was extradited to Connecticut and is
being held in the New Haven Correctional Center on a $1 million bond.

Fine, then stick him in a mental ward for the rest of his life with no
chance of ever getting out. He is obviously unsuitable for living in

I hope they track down the person who abused him and put that person
away, too. You have to get rid of these people to stop the cycle from
perpetuating.

Kill them.
Child abuse is a crime against the future. It is, or should be, classed
as a crime against humanity. Killing the likes of these should not be
considered homicide, justifiable germicide possibly.
So just kill them. It's cheaper, easier and more effective than locking
them up.
100% of executed crims never reoffend. Children that are the potential

Agreed, but it really gets an over the top reaction for how often it occurs.
Put it this way, kids are about 1,000 times more likely to be killed by a
speeding driver than a paedophile, but which one is more reviled by society?
Which one is seen as the greater danger?

Because you might end up killing someone innocent? That's always been my

There have been a number of people on Death Row who have been exonerated
based on DNA evidence. Nobody who's been executed has been checked
against DNA evidence, and of course, there's no way to confirm a party
where there is no DNA evidence.
But, that's sufficient to know that the system is not completely
infallible. And, to tell the truth, I think life without parole in
solitary confinement is a much worse punishment - once you're dead, you
ain't suffering like the victim and/or family.

Kill them.
Child abuse is a crime against the future. It is, or should be, classed
as a crime against humanity.
Agreed, but it really gets an over the top reaction for how often it occurs.
Put it this way, kids are about 1,000 times more likely to be killed by a
speeding driver than a paedophile, but which one is more reviled by society?
Which one is seen as the greater danger?
This particular person didn't actually kill them, he terrorised and
sexually tortured them, they have been traumatised beyond belief, and
probably beyond their ability to recover, in mental terms, from his
sadistic behaviour. Doubtless all or some of them will have long term
or probably permanent sexual disfunction and all kinds of major social
problems for the rest of their lives.
Despite what some may think, there *is* a fate worse than death and it
seems to me that the children in this case have met that fate.
A speeding driver can kill, but it rarely involves a conscious intent to
do so. A child that is raped and tortured before being murdered has
suffered way beyond what a child hit by a car would be likely to
experience and traumatic though it might be to lose a child that way,
it would be at least preferable to losing one to a sexual predator, with
the knowledge of what they endured in their last hours. A survivor of
either kind of trauma would doubtless carry scars, but the accident
victim will not have been through the mental ordeal leading up to it and
will be far more likely to recover with their state of mind intact,
whatever the damage to their body.
Killing the likes of these should not be
considered homicide, justifiable germicide possibly.
So just kill them. It's cheaper, easier and more effective than locking
them up.
100% of executed crims never reoffend. Children that are the potential
victims of these subhuman scum, why risk it?
Because you might end up killing someone innocent? That's always been my
chief objection to the death penalty.
Don't disagree with your sentiments as far as wrongful conviction goes,
but there is not really any doubt about this one and several recent high
profile cases. In my opinion society *has* become too politically
correct, some crimes do deserve death and if we can be certain of that
(as in this case) then we shouldn't be afraid to inflict it.
Ther *is* a difference between some ***** that simply got a little
carried away behind the wheel and killed someone through stupid
behaviour and a predator that tortures children for pleasure, whether he
actually kills them or not. One deserves punishment for sure, but the
other deserves extermination.

Absolutely sickening, as you so rightly say, but (and it is a personal
opinion of a "but") I believe society has a DUTY to show it is better than
such scum, thus to cap this obscenity with ANOTHER obscenity (which is how I
regard the death penalty) just makes it more.. err.. obscene.
Doubtless all or some of them will have long term
or probably permanent sexual disfunction and all kinds of major social
problems for the rest of their lives.
Yes, that is also certainly probable.
Despite what some may think, there *is* a fate worse than death and it
seems to me that the children in this case have met that fate.
Quite possibly - I am merely talking the bare statistics though. Who
children are in more danger from.
A speeding driver can kill, but it rarely involves a conscious intent to
do so. A child that is raped and tortured before being murdered has
suffered way beyond what a child hit by a car would be likely to
experience and traumatic though it might be to lose a child that way,

Again, no disagreement here - I'm certinlay not saying child rape and death
by dangerous drivind are morally equivalent, Just pointing out which one, in
reality, is more likely to happen to a child. Luckily, child rape and
troture is relatively uncommon, which is one of teh reasons it gets so much
publicity when it happens.
Killing the likes of these should not be
considered homicide, justifiable germicide possibly.

Hmm.. but taht's the trouble with the law - it has to be applied evenly in
every case. You're either guilty or not gulity on your day in court, it's an
absolute with no degrees of qualification. Miscarriages of justice by their
very nature usually don't show up for a couple of years.
In my opinion society *has* become too politically
correct, some crimes do deserve death and if we can be certain of that
(as in this case) then we shouldn't be afraid to inflict it.
Fair enough, each to his own and all that - though
1) I can't see what this has to do with PC (an odious construct I try to
challenge daily, BTW)
2) The death penalty apparently does nothing to dissuade similar offences
(though I grant you it significantly lowers a convicts tendency to
re-offend)
Ther *is* a difference between some ***** that simply got a little
carried away behind the wheel and killed someone through stupid
behaviour and a predator that tortures children for pleasure, whether he
actually kills them or not.
Agreed. See points above.
One deserves punishment for sure, but the
other deserves extermination.
Not so agreed, but life would be boring if we all felt the same wouldn't it?
You have a good day - well a better one than your cricket team did at least!
Though I don't suppose the Twenty20 result will be anything like a reliable
predictor for the traditional summer humiliation at the hands of you
colonials...

I don't even agree with the death penalty - *but* I make an exception
when it comes to child molesters. Agreed. Kill them!!!!!

You're right, but dispite the recent uproar, I predict this type of
behavoir will become moret and more acceptable to Liberal society.
Michael Jackson is just the beginning.

That you even begin to compare what this monster did to theselittle
children to GITMO is a crime in itself.
