'Cinderella Man' star charged after allegedly hurling phone at
concierge in a SoHo hotel

Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe was arrested yesterday and charged
with assault for allegedly throwing a telephone at a hotel concierge.
Crowe, who was in the city promoting "Cinderella Man," his new movie
about heavyweight boxing champ James Braddock, was arrested early
yesterday at the Mercer Hotel in SoHo.
"This is a fairly strong case," Assistant District Attorney Chad
Sjoquist told Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Martin Murphy during
Crowe's arraignment.
Sjoquist said there were eyewitnesses to the incident and that Crowe
admitted throwing the phone.
Law enforcement officials gave the following description of the
incident, which occurred at 4:20 a.m.
Crowe had repeatedly tried to call his wife in Australia. Unable to get
through to her, Crowe, who was renting nine rooms in the hotel, took
the phone to the lobby.
"It's absolutely worthless," Crowe told Estrada. "So I figured I'd come
down and give it back to you."
At which point, he threw the phone at concierge Nestor Estrada, 28. The
phone struck Estrada on the left side of his face.
Police were called, and Crowe was arrested a short time later.
He was charged with second-degree assault and criminal possession of a
weapon. If convicted, he could receive up to 7 years in prison.
Estrada suffered a cut to his face, police said.
Prosecutors asked that Crowe, who won a best actor Oscar in 2001 for
his performance as Maximus in "Gladiator," be held in lieu of $5,000
bail.
During the arraignment, Crowe's lawyer, Gerald Lefcourt, asked that his
client be released on his own recognizance.
Lefcourt told Murphy that Crowe has "never been arrested in this
country" and that he was "a very, very charitable, a decent human being
with an excellent background."
Murphy agreed to release the actor without bail.
Crowe, wearing jeans and a blue "Cinderella Man" bomber jacket
emblazoned with a bulldog on a shamrock, walked out of the courtroom,
put on his aviator sunglasses and climbed into a waiting sport utility
vehicle, just seven hours after his arrest.

charged with a
felony - a criminal offense - assault with a deadly weapon (a flying
telephone) !!!!

Geez, what a jerk. Should definitely do jail time, he's a danger to
minimum wage workers everywhere!

I believe a concierge makes more than minimum wage, especially at a
hotel that caters to the "Russell Crowes" of the world.
But still....not enough pay to get assaulted by the hunk!

Jay Leno is only available on cable or satellite tv here, my sweetness

He's not on the FTA channels -- & Letterman is on very late -- well ,
actually early in the morning here....
I don't have cable or satellite tv so I can't watch him !!!
& I only saw the Dave interview with the Gladiator via Dave's website
!!!
When I can afford to get cable or satellite tv -- I 'll watch Jay

Do they? I suppose they'd have to be paid a bit more than some others
in the hotel industry, but from what I can tell the pay is the pits.
Did you know that hotel maids make less than minimum wage? Ridiculous!
But still....not enough pay to get assaulted by the hunk!
Nobody gets paid enough to be treated like that. And I thought my
paternal grandmother was the customer from hell, but this moron
definitely beats her in that category by a long ways!
