The price of oil is soaring and looks close to hitting a record $US100
a barrel, but analysts say the surge may just be a lot of hot air.
US crude oil futures hit a record $US98 a barrel during overnight
trade - a price surge not expected so soon by many oil analysts.
Speculation on the futures market about supply disruption pushed the
oil price higher, with US government data showing domestic crude
stocks experienced a greater than expected fall.
However, many analysts say the fundamentals underpinning the oil price
- supply, demand and inventories - are possibly not as tight as
indicated by the oil price.
"The market seems to be driven by factors other than the fundamentals
at the moment: perceptions of potential supply disruptions, fears of
tightening supply," UBS Equities analyst Gordon Ramsay told AAP.
"Offsetting that has been concerns about global economic growth and
that's what were seeing in the market today."
Despite higher oil prices, Australian oil stocks have not been immune
to negative sentiment in the local market today.
Mr Ramsay said supply concerns surrounded the forthcoming northern
hemisphere winter. Demand could pick up substantially - given the US
alone accounts for about 25 per cent of global oil consumption.
Accordingly, NYMEX December heating oil hit a intraday record of
$US2.6520 per gallon on Wednesday.
Problems at Nigerian oil fields, a recent oil pipeline explosion in
Yemen plus storm-related disruption to some North Sea and Gulf of
Mexico oil fields have contributed to fears of a global tightening of
supply.
"Those (factors) are all temporary, so hopefully we'll see the market
stabilise over time and maybe come back on the perception that the
winter is not as cold as some people thought and demand comes off a
bit with a slowing global economy," Mr Ramsay said.
"Generally though the trend is for oil prices to rise, given oil
production is becoming more expensive and high-quality crude is not as
prevalent as it used to be.
"It is getting harder to find large oil fields and we are going to
become more reliant on Middle East production for conventional oil
supply sources as well as increasing dependency on non-conventional
oil supply sources (such as oil sands), which are higher cost."
Most of the world's spare oil capacity lies in Saudi Arabia.
A greater indication of the reliability of Middle East supply is
expected when the latest Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting
Countries (OPEC) talks begin on November 17.
OPEC controls about 40 per cent of the world's oil supply.
ABN AMRO senior energy analyst Aden Bradley said the OPEC meeting had
big implications for the oil price as it was a meeting of the heads of
state, including those from major producers such as Venezuela and
Iran.
"This the third time the OPEC heads of state have met in 25 years," Mr
Bradley said.
"If there are reassuring comments out of OPEC in regards to capacity
and other strategic decisions in the oil market, you could see quite a
correction subsequent to that.
"If the meeting is an absolute disaster, with a lot of debate and
dissent in the group, you could see an even greater amount of
pessimism in the oil market that OPEC can't do anything to calm
prices."
He said the heads of state meeting indicated OPEC had lost control of
the pricing mechanism.
"They'll talk about the long-term split of quotas and which
denomination oil contracts should be in, which could have a huge
impact on currency markets if they move from the US dollar to the
Euro."
