JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CNN) -- Mark Thatcher, the son of former
British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, has been arrested in South
Africa in connection with the financing of an alleged coup plot in the
West African country of Equatorial Guinea.
The British Foreign Office confirmed to CNN that Thatcher was detained
Wednesday in Cape Town but did not specify the charges.
Sipho Ngwema, a spokesman for the Prosecuting Authority in South Africa,
told CNN that Thatcher had been arrested on suspicion of "contravening
the regulations of the Foreign Military Act."
He said the arrest was "in relation to the possible funding and
logistical assistance in relation to the attempted coup in Equatorial
Guinea."
Thatcher remains at his Cape Town home where the Scorpion Unit -- an
elite police group -- is searching for evidence, he said.
Ngwema said Thatcher is expected to appear in court later Wednesday or
Thursday for a bail hearing.
A spokesman for the British High Commission office in Pretoria told CNN
that "normal consular assistance" will be offered to Thatcher.
"He is a private citizen arrested abroad, so we will aide him like any
British national who is arrested in an overseas country," Nick Sheppard
said.
"We can't comment on what help has been given or what help has been
requested from the British government."
Sheppard said Thatcher's arrest would not have any impact on British
Foreign Secretary Jack Straw's visit to Cape Town Wednesday for talks
with the South African government.

I honestly don't know anything about WHO was to take over. I hope it

And you honestly think that a coup, partly organized by a son of the Iron
Lady, former prime minister of the UK, Margaret Thatcher, who
represents the most extreme wing of conservatism in the UK/World,
would actually bring wealth to all of that poor nation? When a Gue Guevara
would organize such a coup I certainly would have hope, when someone like
the son of the Iron Lady is involved I certainly have not.

news was due to his inablity to read a map - he got lost for about three
