It use to be a *great escape* to come here but since the Tsunami and now
Katrina.....this place is the equivalent of 24 hours a day of CNN
coverage.
It's bad enough without this too and the shifty-shady characters sicken
me.
TOO MUCH so that for now I'm tuning out.

The Right Price
With Steve Price

SPRINGTIME in paradise. Not that any of us would have noticed (other
than your partner being somewhat more romantic and the geckos are
noisier than normal).
And it's not as if there's some gargantuan climatic turn of events
either, other than your partner being hotter than normal. But hot, cold
or windy, it is Spring! Let's enjoy it. This wind would easily blow the
tail off the geckos and, being spring, it would be two at once. It is
the time for romance, any excuse eh! Why not blame a change in seasons
for a lovers' liaison and hold hands down the Houghton, cuddle on
Castle Hill and, as for Kissing Point, I'll leave that for you to
guess. Though do it quick, before its 'Missing Point'. Or as the NQ
bloke's romantic rhyme reveals:
Spring has sprung
the tinny's lost its bung,
so i'm coming home dear
for the footy and a beer.
HAPPY Birthday, GBRMPA, or grumpa OR grumpy! Our great authority on
everything from clams to calamities turned 30 on Monday and we had more
politicians than you could poke a polyp at. WHERE WERE YOU DURING VP60?
Ok, Ok, I won't say any more. Wonderful celebration. I know the
authority is known for its green leaning, BUT why the green food? We
had raw broccoli, cauliflower and carrot to enjoy. Very nice, actually,
but one of the staff said it looked like a coral outcrop on the plate.
Congratulations to all the staff who were given awards and it's a joy
to know the politicians are up to speed with what we do. One said to a
group of scientists: "Your research is fantastic. How long have you had
the whale on show down at those lakes of yours". I'm not telling him
about the fountain!
Oh, yes, and what a wonderful touch having the name tags hand-painted
by the school kids from all over the North. I had one by James
Hietamaki of 6V Belgian Gardens State School. Well done, James, and all
the kids. They looked magnificent. I'm keeping mine, because I like the
dolphin painted on it, and so at four o'clock when I get to work, I can
remember my name.
WAIT until you see the tropical Friday shirt flags as part of Strand
Ephemera this year. This is the best in outside art and, let me tell
you, go on let me please, ok I won't then. If you really won't let me,
go to the next line cos here it is. You will see 43 incredible pieces
and it all begins Friday. The best news is that on Sunday at midday,
near Georges place (Picnic Bay Surf Club), we have a picnic for all the
artists and entertainment by Tropic Sun (it never stops eh!). Bring the
family - you will love it. One of the artists had on an interesting
shirt at the presentation, 'No Junk Males'. What does she mean, lads?
OUR local festivals are some of the best in the country, and the Water
Fest is a top example. In fact, I'm still wet from being hosed last
year. Still, it was Saturday ... wash day. Tomorrow night the Gala Ball
and on Saturday Queen St glows with the grand parade and street party.
It really is a great celebration of life in the Burdekin, thanks to the
mighty water basin. Now for the big plug. The Rotary Club's steak
sangers are the best in the world, in fact better than any other world,
too! As the mardi grass gets under way, you'll be able to smell 'em
from just outside Stuart if your heading along the Bruce Holeway
Saturday avo. Good luck to all for the Water Festival. See you at 9am
outside Ayr Camera Centre. I have a special position. I'm the
festival's 'Official Drip'. Worse still, we're only allowed to drink
water for the whole weekend, fellas. TROOOOOO!
I HAVE a great job! Like last Sunday morning with the kids from Arcadia
for the big sign-on. We had a mock helicopter rescue, though the lads
involved said the water was so cold it might end up a real rescue.
Wimps. Also, more snags than the Burdekin River, cooked to perfection.
It was a wonderful family day and you can still get the kids involved.
The young of the North love the nippers, a social and sporting
organisation put together by the local surf clubs, and on Sunday we
actually had surf. In the photo, the little bloke closest to me
presented me with a special 75-year shirt of Arcadia. In his little
speech, he said: "Thank you, Pricey. Now you can get rid of that
horrible orange one you have on". Nice.
I CAN'T believe it. According to the weather bureau, the weather is
actually looking good for the weekend for the Bill Fish Challenge. No
battling 30-knot winds and spilt beer. It may even be calm enough so
the caviar won't slip off the plate! Good on ya guys. BUT, remember how
good the girls were last year. They are ready to take the title and
there's nothing stopping them. Karen Foley and her team have secret
weapons ... MERMAIDS! True, you can believe me. The story goes like
this. They apparently befriended the mermaids, half coral trout and
Indy Girls down at Strand jetty one night after a kid threw them back
for being over size, and now they are Marlin Spotting for the Pink
Ladies Bill Fish team. You have no hope guys!!! Is this cheating?
Better enlist Migaloo . . .
HAVE a glorious weekend. Enjoy springtime in your garden. See you in
Ayr or at the footy or swinging in a hammock reading the Weekender and
laughing at old Mal Weatherup's column. Happy days, ooroo.

Oh yes and how quaint they are, some are quite good and some quite
weird but that's ART, nice though on the beach front with those
sparkling waters and the clearest skies, stars are good at present too.
Must go and see the other half.

Not too many prophecies of GOOD things are there?? ;-)
If it bleeds, it leads.
My New Town we live in has a weekly paper. It's free. I actually help my
kids deliver it ... $.08/paper too!! Anyhow, it's all good news stuff, a
local kid decides to do a personal bike-a-thon for the benefit of the
local hospital (it's a major article too so she's got lots of free
advertising), potluck supper at the local Anglican church this Sunday
night, local C&W concert in the park all weekend, etc etc.
I do not watch any news programs. I do not subscribe to any major
newspapers. I got fed up years ago with most media outlets. A few are
still an exception, TVO and PBS have some responsible news shows.
As far as the DoomsSayers here go, I trust my own instinct.
Hugs from the Android One,
Der Marvie
