Top Saddam aide reportedly in negotiations with U.S.
A senior aide to Saddam Hussein is reported ill and ready to surrender to U.S.
military forces. Former Iraqi Vice President Izzat Ibrahim, one of Saddam's key
henchmen, is negotiating with U.S. military forces on the terms of his
surrender, according to the Baghdad newspaper Al Yawm al Akhar.
The Arabic daily stated that French doctors secretly entered Iraq earlier this
month to help Ibrahim with a blood transfusion. Ibrahim suffers from leukemia.
According to the newspaper, Ibrahim is hiding in the Al Zab area of the
northern city of Mosul.
On Oct. 6, the newspaper reported that Ibrahim was close to reaching an
agreement to surrender. The key condition for his surrender is that he not be
turned over to Kuwait, where the government has wants to try him for war crimes
for his role in encouraging Saddam to invade that country in August 1990.
