How soon should Bush send the Marines? It's obvious Chirac is in way =
over his head.=20
Violence around Paris and other French cities flared for a tenth =
consecutive night despite a vow by authorities to step up action against =
the youths responsible for the arson attacks, which appear to have =
become organized.
Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy held a meeting of police chiefs to =
discuss tactics as they braced for another night of violence that has so =
far defied all efforts to stamp it out.
In a sign of the government's resolve, police said more than 250 people =
were arrested during Friday night alone -- doubling at once the number =
of detentions recorded since the troubles first erupted on October 27.
But after dark fell on Saturday fires erupted in the Paris region and =
the southwestern city of Toulouse.
About 100 cars were set ablaze in the Ile-de-France region around Paris =
by 10 pm (2100 GMT), according to a police source, who said it was too =
early in the evening to tell whether the situation was worsening.
Almost 900 vehicles were burned overnight Friday-Saturday in the worst =
night yet of violence.
Two schools, a youth center and gymnasium were also set ablaze in the =
Paris area on Saturday evening, and firefighters said there appeared to =
have been an attempt to set four cars alight with a Molotov cocktail in =
the Republique area of central Paris.
Since the nightly rioting began more than 2,000 automobiles have gone up =
in flames.
Firefighters in the southwestern city of Toulouse said they responded to =
about 30 arson calls by 10 pm Saturday evening, including 20 cars set =
alight and blazes in trash cans outside public buildings including =
schools.
A police source said officers were dealing with hit and run attacks by =
about 30 "very aggressive" young men, aged between 15 and 25. Police in =
Toulouse said "several individuals" had been arrested.
The violence began last week when two teenagers, of African and Arab =
origins, were electrocuted while hiding in an electrical sub-station =
after fleeing a police identity check.
The riots, which began in the immigrant suburbs northeast of Paris, have =
intensified and spread each night, eventually surrounding the capital =
and then, overnight Thursday, flaring also in Marseille, Dijon and in =
Normandy.
Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin held a crisis meeting with Sarkozy =
and other key ministers Saturday, with officials "unanimous in their =
firmness" in seeking an end to the violence, Sarkozy said after the =
meeting.
"The violence is not acceptable," he told journalists.
Some 2,300 more police than normal were on the streets overnight =
Saturday, while additional firefighters were being sent to the Paris =
region, officials said.
While the government acknowledged that the grim conditions in the =
suburbs -- chronic high unemployment, racial discrimination, miserable =
housing, drugs -- had much to do with the discontent, Sarkozy and other =
security officials also voiced suspicions that the unrest was being =
organised.
Paris prosecutor general Yves Bot told Europe 1 radio Saturday there was =
"organised violence," but did not say by whom.
"If I could give an exact answer, those people would already be under =
arrest," he said. "But we can see organised actions, a strategy."
Youths have been seen relaying police movements by mobile telephone, and =
have started Internet weblogs urging other parts of France to join the =
unrest.
So far no one has been killed in the unrest except the two youths whose =
accidental deaths set off the rioting.=20
At least two people have been badly burnt by Molotov cocktails: a =
fireman, and a handicapped woman unable to get off an ambushed bus. A =
61-year-old was also in a coma after being hit by an assailant in a =
public housing estate.
Efforts to crackdown on the rioters have so far failed to be effective, =
with tough talk by Sarkozy, who has been preparing a bid to run in 2007 =
presidential elections on the strength of "zero tolerance" law-and-order =
policies, stoking tension.
Just before the rioting began he called delinquents "rabble" and vowed =
to clean their districts "with a power-hose."
"It was calm for a long time here. If there hadn't been Sarko's words -- =
'power-hose,' 'rabble' -- there wouldn't have been all this," a =
22-year-old man in the northern tinderbox suburb of Aulnay-sous-Bois =
told AFP.
"He makes us suffer, he's a racist. He's put fuel on the fire," Fatou, a =
14-year-old boy of African background, said.
But so far the riots appear to have done little damage to Sarkozy's =
political fortunes, with a CSA poll conducted November 2-3 finding 57 =
percent of French still have a positive image of him.

Terribly odd seeing all this happening in a foreign country.
Don't see any paratroopers, American style, in the French city streets.
Haven't seen any shopkeepers standing in front of their stores,
American style, with firearms in their hands.
Haven't seen any French citizens armed with pistols and shotguns,
American style, blocking off neighborhood streets to keep rioters from
burning and looting their neighborhoods.
I can empathize with poor and oppressed people being unhappy with their
lot in life. Can't empathize with 1 day of burning and looting let
alone ten.
God help 'em if they ever start that stuff here. I hope the Imams will
be cognizant of Western cultural differences.

And getting more it seems.
We've been hearing large cats in the woods (within 100 yards) this year
while bowhunting. Hunting some thick swampy ground in the middle of
cornfields.
Kellas cats or "panthers" have been spotted in the area for years.
There was a confirmed mountain lion kill on an adult Arabian show horse
80 miles east of here last August 31. Makes you leery of going into
the woods with just 4 sharp sticks.
A buddy of mine did a fly-in bow-hunt for bear in Canada a few years
ago. You're not allowed to carry sidearms with you when you hunt up
there. A bear climbed his treestand after him not once but twice one
night. The only thing he could do was swat the thing in the face with
his cap. He ended up killing the bear and then another one charged him
a bit later when he was standing over the kill.
I expect to keep my hat on my head at all times, regardless of the
situation.
If anyone is planning on adding to their collection I'd suggest doing
it within the next 12 to 36 months. No telling how things will change
once Hillary and the democrats start running the Bushites out of
Washington.

Where from? My buddy picked up a very nice 8 pointer last weekend. Perfect lung shot at 35 yards.
The deer are thick in my area. (Wisconsin) Freezer will be full this winter. ;-)

Southern Michigan. Predators are making a large comeback here.
Coyotes big time, wolves especially in the U.P., now lions apparently.
Hunters in the U.P. haven't been seeing any fawns, and it's getting to
be the same way down here. They're blaming it on the timber wolves up
there. Haven't seen any wolves down here yet but it's only a matter of
time. The DNR is wanting hunters all over the state to be sure they
can tell what a Grey Wolf looks like.
A guy I know was walking out of the woods in the U.P. with his rifle
and came across a grisly scene. A deer leg here, a deer leg there,
deer guts up in the trees. He called and a C.O. came out, looked
around, smirked and said, 'Yup, you've got cats". Jumped in his truck
and left.
I've taken six deer in the last four years. I've got a funny feeling
the predator competition is going to make it look like the last four
years was the good old days. Gonna make it harder to get that "sausage
on the hoof" I'm afraid.

I have to laugh. A fellow from the local DNR (name witheld) still refuses to accept that we have big
cats in N Wisconsin.
Yes, the wolf issue has become huge. Something is disrupting the herd in N Wisconsin and it's highly
suspected that wolves are one cause. The southern and central part of the state have plenty of deer.
Actually too many. The car/deer marriages are much too frequent.
Do you make your own sausage? If so, care to share seasoning tips?

The way it goes with the DNR is that they deny until it becomes
undeniable. I think the "greenies" want the predators back. So do the
farmers and the insurance companies (powers that be). When cats start
jumping the suburban fences and eating the yuppie's Yorkies people will
begin to remember why the predators were driven out to begin with.
<Do you make your own sausage? If so, care to share seasoning tips?>
I skin and bone out my deer, bag up the meat and send it to a fairly
famous butcher down the road. Does work for Cabela's. I've got an
aunt that has a great recipe for jerky. I'll post it one of these days.

protect themselves.

More refined than us I'm sure they want to be more humane.
It's gotta be fear in their government also. What if cracking down
brings more anger, animosity? What sort of response would establish a
peaceful longterm precedent? :-)
North American citizens might be less tolerant, less humane. There's a
core of us that will never rely on just the government to protect us.
That's a "precedent" that would hopefully keep the peace.

<That's exactly why it is continuing unabated! God help the innocents
citizens!>

Exactly. And that's why innocent citizens need any means necessary to
protect themselves.

Are frogs even allowed to have guns?

<Why France has not declared martial law is beyond me. Political
correctness
should have limits.>

More refined than us I'm sure they want to be more humane.

It's gotta be fear in their government also. What if cracking down
brings more anger, animosity? What sort of response would establish a
peaceful longterm precedent? :-)

North American citizens might be less tolerant, less humane. There's a
core of us that will never rely on just the government to protect us.
That's a "precedent" that would hopefully keep the peace.

I don't think so. It looks to me more and more that they're "subjects"
rather than citizens.

Then you are either due applause for such wonderfully subtle humour or you
are perpetuating the stereotype of the American commenting on other
countries. France soundly rejected the idea of being subject in 1789 and
have been citizens of a Republic ever since. You may have been aware of
something called the French Revolution? Involved a lot of heads getting
chopped off etc. Your entire constitution, political system and even the
architecture of the buildings was copied wholesale by the US Republic.
Of course had you chosen to investigate rather than simply spout ingnorant
prejudice, you'd also find out that France has among the laxest gun laws in
Western Europe :

htm
you can have semi-auoto miltray rfles for home defence in France. I suspect
the lack of such vigilantism is merely a demostration of France's superior
humanity and civilisation. How many Yanks woudl have killed each other by
now in the same situation?

I hope the Imans will be cognizant of the fact that a large percentage
of gun-toting Americans would love nothing better than an excuse to
"defend" themselves against rioting/looting/trespassing muslims.

Oh God yes. "Millions of fuckin idiots" hummin' along with Lee
Greenwood while "defending themselves" stringing up brown people. Too
much anger and frustration, too many don't dare tread on me types out
there.
Perish the very thought of any kind of violence coming out of the
muslim community here. Truly, don't mess with them folks on their
homeland. <shudder>
