Object: Toutatis Toutorial - All You Care to Know...if you even care ;)
The asteroid Toutatis is shaped like a bowling pin and has one of the
most erratic orbits of any near Earth object. On September 29, Toutatis
will come within about 1 million miles of Earth, the closest it has been
to the planet since 1353 and the closest it will be until 2562.
As a result, there are two schools of thought as to what might happen:
Scientists at NASA and elsewhere say there's no need to worry about an
impact with Earth, yet warnings about an impending impact are zipping
around the Internet faster than you can say World Wide Web.
Writing in Sky & Telescope magazine, Alan M. MacRoberts reports the
asteroid will make it closest approach to Earth yet. You can read his
article here.
http://skyandtelescope.com/observing/objects/asteroids/article_1336_1.asp
From measuring Toutatis, NASA says it knows the tumbling asteriod will
not hit the Earth for the next 65 years. However, with its odd shape and
erratic tumbling motion Toutatis' movements are hard to predict. A lot
of information on the asteroid can be found at NASA's website here.
http://echo.jpl.nasa.gov/asteroids/4179_Toutatis/toutatis.html
A graphic depiction of Toutatis' orbit can be found here.
http://echo.jpl.nasa.gov/asteroids/4179_Toutatis/toutatis_orbit.gif
Intellpuke: "I hope NASA is correct and
Toutatis will miss the Earth. A million miles, however, is a very short
distance, astronomically speaking, and given the asteroid's erratic
orbit and the difficulty in predicting its movements, hoping NASA is
correct is the best I can give it at this point. In six days, we will
all find out which school of thought on Toutatis is accurate. "

Thanks Susan. I have also read that it will be making another round
on that fateful year 2012. And that it is actually made up of two
large rocks moving in tandom. Just a gentle nudge (astronomically
speaking) would radically change the tragictory and double the odds of
an earth impact.
What the heck, we need an apocalypse every now and then for a fresh
start.
Seems to be a pretty popular religous theme. Could there be a better
time than now? ;)

There is so much of our space rubbish orbiting around......How much of a

One HELL of a nudge. A piece of 10 pound earth space debris
is NOT going to affect several million tons of orbital asteroid .

We are NOT in the end times. Not even CLOSE.

Talk about asteroid angst, one would think we are threatened by an
erratic asteroid, which may be two asteroids clinging together, hence
the funny shape!

Astronomy wise, there's a few million amateur astronomers anticipating
the "close" approach, many with sophisticated computer controlled
scopes and imagers (myself included). So we are all tracking this
object, similar in the way we track comets. With things called
ephemerides.
Now the cool thing about all this, is all us amateurs (and a few
professionals too), all over the world, enter our GPS co-ordinates,
the ephemerides of the object we are looking for (in this case
Toutatis), and the time. So our computers KNOW where to point, and
how to track.
What's cool, is even those without computer controlled scopes know
where to look on each and every night.
Yet the chicken littles of the world don't understand that.
I guess millions of amateur astronomers must be part of an
international conspiracy, and only the chicken littles of the world
know the TRVTH, huh?
