Troops storm two Gaza synagogues
Amid high emotion, settlers carried out from last major holdouts

NEVE DEKALIM, Gaza Strip - Israeli troops stormed the last two bastions
of resistance to the Gaza pullout on Thursday, removing settlers and
supporters, many of them youths, from two synagogues in the Neve
Dekalim and Kfar Darom settlements.
Security forces with shields and helmets burst into the Kfar Darom
synagogue and fired a water cannon at protesters gathered on the
fortified rooftop.
Police removed piles of chairs and debris blocking the doors. Army
cranes began raising metal cages up to the roof, preparing to carry
protesters away.
Troops inside one cage - a moving container with sides made of metal
wire - held up shields against a barrage of eggs, milk bags and
paint-filled light bulbs as it was raised to the roof.
Shortly before that, hundreds of unarmed soldiers and police swept into
the main Jewish house of worship in the largest Gaza settlement, Neve
Dekalim, to end a two-day standoff with 1,500 protesters, most of them
ultranationalist youths who had defied orders to leave.
Protesters there linked arms and chanted "Jews don't expel Jews"
as groups of four soldiers pulled them out one by one and carried them
to waiting buses. One youth wrapped in an Israeli flag writhed and
sobbed as he was taken away.
Soldiers heading in and out of the building burst into tears during the
operation, which aims to break down the last bastions of resistance to
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan to end 38 years of occupation of
the coastal territory.
Kfar Darom operation
At Kfar Darom, soldiers had earlier encircled hundreds of young
radicals holed up behind razor wire at the synagogue, many standing on
the rooftop singing.
Troops also knocked on doors nearby and ordered people out. Shouting
and sobbing, some had to be dragged out, repeating scenes from other
Gaza settlements the day before.
"We won't be moved from the Land of Israel," shrieked a bearded
man in a prayer shawl who tied himself to a staircase and had to be cut
down and carried away by soldiers. Rightist Jews believe Gaza is part
of Israel's biblical birthright.
Despite pockets of resistance, the evacuation of 21 settlements in Gaza
and four of 120 enclaves in the West Bank under Sharon's plan for
reducing conflict with Palestinians was moving ahead much faster than
expected.
