C E N T V R I E C I N Q V I E S M E.
(édition de novembre 1557)
*
X C I I
Apres le siege tenu dixsept ans,
Cinq changeront en tel reuolu terme:
Puis sera l'vn esseu de mesme temps,
Qui des Romains ne sera trop conforme.
*
In plain English, this verse refers to a holder of the Holy See
who shall be the fifth successor to a pope who would have reigned
for seventeen years, who would have been elected the same year as
his predecessor, and who is not Italian. Guess who?! :-)
*
This quatrain becomes clear only on Monday, October 16, 1978,
when Polish Cardinal Karol Josef Wojtyla is elected pope.
*
Only then do we see the roundabout way in which Nostradamus
points to this unusual event, the first non-Italian since
Nostradamus to be elected pope, the last having been the Dutch
Hadrian VI, pope between January 9, 1522, and September 14, 1523,
when Nostradamus was 19.
*
The verse starts with a pope whose reign lasted 17 years and 4
days, i.e., Pius XI, pope between February 6, 1922, and February
10, 1939. This is line 1.
*
In line 2, Nostradamus speaks of five successors to Pius IX: Pius
XII, John XXIII, Paul VI, John-Paul I and John-Paul II.
*
Line 3 is very obscure, requires the passage of time to be
understood, as Nostradamus notes that John-Paul II was elected
the same year as John-Paul I, whose reign lasted only 33 days.
*
The punch line, as is often the case with Nostradamus, is line 4,
which points to the nationality of that fifth successor to Pius
XI. How does Nostradamus say so?
*
He just says that this one is... not too much like Romans.
*
Clever, eh?!
*
