Two of Saddam's co-defendants are executed

Iraq has executed Saddam Hussein's half-brother and the former chief of
the Revolutionary Court, says a prosecutor.
Barzan Ibrahim, Saddam's half brother and former intelligence chief,
and Awad Hamed al-Bandar were hanged at dawn on Monday, said Munqith
al-Faroon.
"They (the government) called us before dawn and told us to send
someone. I sent a judge to witness the execution and it happened," he
said.
Their deaths come 16 days after the controversial execution of the
former Iraqi dictator.
The executions took place in the same former military intelligence
building where Saddam met his end.
A court had found all three guilty on Nov. 5 of the 1982 killings of
148 Shiite Muslims in the Iraqi city of Dujail.
An Iraqi appeals court rejected Saddam's appeal on Dec. 26.
The government planned to hang both men with Saddam on Dec. 30.
However, Iraqi authorities then decided to execute Saddam separately.
Iraqi national security adviser Mowaffak al-Rubaie called that occasion
"a special day."
Cellphone video showing Saddam being taunted and insulted by Shiite
guards immediately before his death created an outcry.
Last week, Iraq's President Jalal Talabani urged a delay in the
executions of Ibrahim and Al-Bandar.
"In my opinion we should wait. We should examine the situation,'' he
said. However, Talabani didn't elaborate on his words.
The convicted men
As head of Iraq's dreaded Mukhabarat intelligence service for Saddam,
Ibrahim was likely involved in the torture and deaths of thousands of
Iraqis.
In addition, he targeted regime opponents abroad for assassination and
purged those suspected of disloyalty from the armed forces.
Ibrahim became Iraq's representative to the United Nations in Geneva in
1989. He even sat on the UN's human rights committee at one point.
During his decade in Geneva, Ibrahim is believed to have managed
clandestine bank accounts for his half-brother.
U.S. forces captured him in April 2003, not long after the March 19,
2003 invasion of Iraq.
As head of the Revolutionary Court, al-Bandar issued death sentences
against the people killed in Dujail.
He often presided over show trials against the Saddam regime's
opponents.
