Up to 135 die in massive Baghad market bombing

In one of the worst such attacks since the 2003 invasion, up to 135
people died in a busy Baghdad market when a truck laden with
foodstuffs and one ton of explosives detonated.
The bomb -- triggered by a suicide bomber -- destroyed market stalls
and stores in the outdoor Sadriyah market on Saturday, which is
located in a primarily Shiite area.
"The roof of my shop caved in on my head," one man told reporters in
Arabic. "All I know is something blue up."
"We don't allow big trucks in the market, but the driver convinced us
that he had food to deliver for a shop. Once he got inside, he
detonated the bomb," Kamil Ibrahim, a 36-year-old vegetable vendor,
told reporters at Kindi Hospital.
While Ibrahim suffered wounds to his head, chest and abdomen, two of
his young workers were killed.
Kindi hospital was overwhelmed with the large number of patients, and
eventually asked ambulances to take patients elsewhere.
Authorities blamed the high casualty count on the fact that so many
buildings -- 30 shops and 40 houses -- were leveled.
No group has claimed responsibility for the bombing, the latest in a
series of attacks targeting mainly Shiite commercial targets in
Baghdad.
The U.S. is planning a security sweep in Baghdad along with the help
of Iraqi police and soldiers, and there are suggestions the attack was
meant to provoke Shiite retaliation and inflict as much violence as
possible.
The violence prompted Iraq's senior Shiite cleric, the Iranian-born
Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, to call for Muslim unity and an end to
sectarian conflict -- his first public statement in months on the
worsening security crisis.
He said the violence would only benef "those who want to dominate the
Islamic country and control its resources to achieve their aims."
White House reacts
In Washington, the White House described the bombing as an atrocity,
adding: "Free nations of the world must not stand by while terrorists
commit mass murder in an attempt to derail democratic progress in Iraq
and throughout the greater Middle East."
On Saturday, U.S. President George Bush spent his day trying to charm
Democratic legislators.
He tried to sell them on his "surge" strategy, which involves sending
an additional 21,500 U.S. troops to Iraq. The vast majority of those
will be deployed in Baghdad.
"I listened to many members here. I listened to members of my own
party. I listened to the military and came up with a plan that I
genuinely believe has the best of succeeding," he said.
Bush also added that he didn't think that opposing him over the war
means "you don't share the same sense of patriotism I do."
"You know, I welcome debate in a time of war and I hope you know
that," he said. "These are tough times, but there's no doubt in my
mind that you want to secure this homeland as much as I do."
Bush's words came as the estimated number of U.S. military casualties
in Iraq hit 3,096.
The total number of civilians killed in Iraq on Saturday was estimated
to be about 160.
On Friday, part of the National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq was
declassified.
The document, the first such report in two years, raised doubts
whether Iraq could be stabilized.
"Iraqi society's growing polarization, the persistent weakness of the
security forces and the state in general, and all sides' ready
recourse to violence are collectively driving an increase in communal
and insurgent violence and political extremism," the report said.
"Unless efforts to reverse these conditions show measurable progress
during the term of this estimate, the coming 12 to 18 months, we
assess that the overall security situation will continue to
deteriorate at rates comparable to the latter part of 2006."
In other developments:
In the northern city of Kirkuk, eight bombs exploded within two hours,
beginning with a suicide car bomber who targeted the offices of the
Kurdish Democratic Party. Two people were killed in the first
explosion, which devastated four nearby houses;
In Mosul, armed insurgents and Iraqi forces fought for several hours
and authorities imposed a temporary curfew on the city. There was no
immediate word on casualties;
Gunmen attacked a police checkpoint at the northern entrance to
Samarra, north of Baghdad, killing four policemen and wounding
another. Three militants were killed and one was wounded in the
fighting;
In Beiji, 250 kilometres north of Baghdad, a convoy of 15 cars
carrying gunmen brandishing weapons and banners declaring the
establishment of an "Islamic State" drove through the Sunni town while
businessmen quickly closed their stores for fear of trouble.
