Bush fires cause haze over Melbourne
9/12/2006 11:12:02
Smoke is beginning to drift over Melbourne, as the day begins with
temperatures at least ten degrees higher than average for the season.
About 3,000 firefighters, including more than 40 New Zealanders, are
trying bring massive bush fires under control. So far, around 150,000
hectares of vegetation throughout Victoria has been destroyed.
Forecasters say the hot northerly winds are getting stronger and may
help the individual blazes merge into a single super fire.

Emergency services are preparing for explosive conditions in Victoria's
fire-ravaged north-east this afternoon as an ominous smoke cloud
blankets much of Victoria.
A total fire ban is in force across the state with the Bureau of
Meteorology forecasting temperatures approaching 40 degrees - and even
more extreme conditions tomorrow.
With the temperatures climbing in areas under immediate threat,
firefighters today escorted power company workers deep into the danger
zone to restore power to hundreds of residents in the path of the
growing firestorm.
Communications and road access were cut to towns in the King Valley and
Woods Point areas, which are threatened by the north-east and Gippsland
fire fronts respectively.
A falling tree cut power lines to more than 273 customers in the
Cheshunt and Cheshunt South areas of the King Valley, leaving them
without electric water pumps, generators and communications.
Power was restored to all but 25 residents in the Cheshunt area just
after midday and SP Ausnet power company spokeswoman Emma
Daniell-Edwards said the company hoped to return power to remaining
residents by mid-afternoon.
Power is also out for almost 200 customers around Woods Point and
Jameison, which has been on intermittent power through the week.
"We won't be given access to that area for quite some time because
that's engulfed in fire at the moment," Ms Daniell-Edwards said.
Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) spokeswoman Rachel
May said those without power and without a backup generator should
start filling all available containers - wheelie bins, bath tubs, stock
troughs - with water and monitor emergency updates with battery-powered
radios.
Firefighters worked hard overnight to establish control lines in a bid
to protect private property, plantations and other critical assets.
"We're expecting a wind change late tomorrow or tomorrow night. That
will actually push the fire in an north, maybe easterly direction.
We're trying as best as possible to try and hold the fire where it is,"
Ms May said.
The 14 fires have burnt about 170,000 hectares.

Australian brush fires threaten towns, disrupt flights
Last Updated: Saturday, December 9, 2006 | 11:08 AM ET
CBC News
Firefighters in the southern Australian state of Victoria were working
Saturday to contain about 20 major fires that threatened to merge into
one massive blaze.
The fires have burned at least 180,000 hectares of drought-stricken
farmland and forest.
This photo released from NASA shows smoke from fires burning in
southeastern Australia on Friday.
(NASA Satellite/Associated Press) There are concerns they could soon
merge, sparking fears of a scenario similar to that in 1939, when the
Black Friday fires stretched from Alpine National Park to the coast,
killing 71 people in Victoria.
Heavy smoke across much of the eastern part of the state set off fire
alarms and disrupted flights at Melbourne's main airport on Saturday.
Qantas Airways said two of its flights to Melbourne had to be diverted
to other airports because of poor visibility.
People living in more than 20 nearby towns have been warned they may
have to leave their homes.
Temperatures reaching nearly 40 C and high winds are driving the fires,
which are expected to push toward the coast over the next few days.
Soldiers have been called up to bolster a mostly volunteer firefighting
force of almost 3,000, including a contingent from New Zealand.
Typically, Australia's most serious forest fires are reported in
December, January and February.
In 2003, brush fires destroyed about 500 homes, blackened three million
hectares and killed seven people.

Smoke blankets Australian state
Large areas of south-eastern Australia are swathed in smoke as some of
the worst bush fires for nearly 70 years threaten mountain and country
towns.
The fires in the state of Victoria, mostly in eastern alpine areas,
have burned at least 180,000 hectares (445,000 acres) of drought-hit
land.
There are fears that the blazes could merge into one "super fire".
Bush fires are common in Australia's hot summer months, but this year's
are being described as exceptional.
People in Victoria are recalling the state's "Black Friday" in 1939,
when 71 people died in fires.
It's the worst drought on record for Victoria, which means all the
forest and grassland is extremely dry
Rachaele May
Victoria environment spokeswoman
No-one has been killed in the latest emergency, but firefighters say
expected rising winds and high summer temperatures mean extreme danger
through the weekend.
It is feared some of the fires, mostly sparked by lightning strikes,
could burn for months.
The Australian army has been mobilised to back up local firefighters,
who are also being helped by crews from beyond Victoria, as well as a
specialist team from New Zealand.
The state government's environment spokeswoman, Rachaele May, said it
was a "significant possibility" that all of the fires would eventually
merge into one larger fire.
"It's the worst drought on record for Victoria, which means all the
forest and grassland is extremely dry," she told the Australian
Broadcasting Corporation.
Thick smoke has grounded aircraft used in operations to dump water on
the flames, while smoke drifting hundreds of kilometres has blanketed
the state capital, Melbourne, cutting visibility and disrupting
passenger flights.
Australia's largest airline, Qantas, reported flight delays of up to an
hour from Melbourne.
A flight from Los Angles was diverted to Sydney, while a domestic
flight from Sydney was diverted to the national capital, Canberra, to
refuel.
Nine people died in fires on South Australia state's Eyre Peninsula in
January 2005.
In 2003, more than 500 houses were destroyed and four people killed
when a huge fire tore through the capital, Canberra.

Last Update: Tuesday, December 12, 2006. 12:25pm (AEDT)
Tasmania bushfires: Up to 18 homes were lost yesterday (file photo).
(ABC TV)
Wind change poses new fire risk
Firefighters have warned that a wind change this afternoon means fire
is likely to threaten more homes on Tasmania's east coast.
Residents of St Marys currently are at a public meeting to get the
latest information on the fire, which started at the weekend and has so
far covered more than 10,000 hectares.
The bushfire has this morning been heading north from Scamander towards
Beaumaris.
But the north-easterly wind change means that its progress in that
direction is likely to slow.
Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) spokesman Danny Reid says the southern
flank of the blaze is now likely to be the biggest problem.
"The wind will push it towards Irish town, St Marys, Patricks Head,
Elephant Pass and if it gets past Elephant Pass it'll get into the
Douglas-Apsley National Park and it could go right through to Bicheno,"
he said.
At the meeting in St Marys, residents have so far been told they need
to either leave or get ready to defend their homes against the
approaching fire.
Mr Reid says it is important residents decide whether to stay and
protect their property or leave.
"Most people [have] opted to stay with their properties, which is good
and we would encourage people to do that," he said.
"They don't need to panic but what they need to do today is to just get
an appreciation of just how serious this situation could be later in
the day ... and decide what they're going to do, what their plan is."
Today's milder conditions mean a large water bombing helicopter has
been used.
Homes lost
The TFS says so far 18 homes have been destroyed in the Scamander area,
but a full estimate of the damage has not yet been done.
Some Scamander residents do not know if their homes are still standing.
Peggy says she and her husband were evacuated from their orchard on
Upper Scamander Road yesterday afternoon and have not been able to
return.
"We've told by people that our house is lost and several houses around
our house, but we don't know for sure," she said.
"The police won't let us go there and they wouldn't let us stay and
fight the fire, they actually told us to go yesterday - we had no
choice."
Meanwhile a man is receiving treatment in hospital after being injured
yesterday near the fire front at Scamander.
The Ambulance Service says a 60-year-old man was taken to St Helens
Hospital suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.
The extent of his injuries is not yet known.

was on December 31 last year, when the mercury hit 42.9 degrees.
Fire crews around Victoria had another day of oppressive conditions.
The mercury reached 41 in Wangaratta, 42 in the Latrobe Valley and 36
in Bairnsdale. It was more than 37 at Mount Gellibrand, near Colac,
where fire destroyed a house.
Conditions were stifling in many centres including Swan Hill, Kerang,
Essendon and Laverton, where temperatures reached 43 degrees.
The cool change that brought relief to the west and Melbourne in the
afternoon was not expected to reach the fire-affected alpine areas
until late last night and was not expected in Gippsland until today,
bringing with it lower temperatures and the chance of showers.
The bureau expects conditions today and tomorrow to be favourable to
firefighters, but south-westerlies could cause fires to change
direction.
The forecast for Wednesday is warm to hot inland with light to moderate
northerlies. Showers and thunderstorms may develop on Thursday.

42.1° — one of hottest December days on record
December 11, 2006
MELBOURNE had one of its hottest December days on record as the
temperature reached 42.1 at 2.45pm yesterday.
It got that hot for a week or so in Eastern Canada summer of
1975 and it was damp, damp, frikkin damp. Entire week was 40C
or above and that with a condensing atmosphere.
It can also get that hot (43C) in places like San Jose Kalifornia
of a day then cool down to 25C at night. Mind you thAts a dryish
heat.
