U.S.: Illegals Harm Reservation
June 18, 2004 2207 GMT
Ned Norris Jr., the vice chairman of the Tohono O'odham Indian Nation,
said that the influx of illegal aliens and drug traffickers is
severely affecting the reservation, which shares a 75-mile border with
Mexico. U.S. Senator John McCain, R-Ariz., chaired the hearing on
passing legislation that would increase border security by providing
high-tech surveillance in the area. The effort comes as a result of
increased border security in Texas and California, which has forced
smugglers to use the Arizona border for illegal traffic. In the
hearing, Senator McCain also addressed immigration reform that would
provide legal status to millions of immigrants who are illegally
working in the United States.
