US contingency plans for air strikes on Iran extend beyond nuclear sites and
include most of the country's military infrastructure, the BBC has learned.
It is understood that any such attack - if ordered - would target Iranian
air bases, naval bases, missile facilities and command-and-control centres.

That sounds about right. They're not going to sit around idly
while we obliterate their nuclear research sites. They're going
to fight with everything they have (which could be considerable
with the recent Soviet involvement).
Only the US could take them on and be assured a victory, and
I think Iran and the Soviets suspect that conflict is highly
likely. Why else would Iran be balking at making further
payments to Russia ? The Iranian economic infrastructure
would be devastated 1 month into such a conflict, and no
further payments would be possible. Russia for it's part is
***** at Iran.

And you can quibble all day over Russia, but it's
China that you really have to worry about.
Iran is a cash cow for Russia. But Russia's star is
on the rise. Natural gas prices have spiked, Russia
has the largest proven reserves, and Iran is #2.
Knock out Iran and the impact on Russia is immediate
and large.... well beyond enough to make up for the
loss of Iran's arms & nuclear technology business.
If I was Putin I'd be on the phone every day begging
Bush to attack.
Iran also has the 5th largest proven reserves of crude
oil. Knock out Iran for even a few years, and oil
prices go through the roof. More than anyone that hurts
China. Their double-digit growth is tied to oil.
China is the key here, and, ultimately, the defender of
terrorism.

Interesting. I would think that taking out their ability to communicate
would be a primary target, as well.
