The United States called the proposal by Russian President Vladimir
Putin to hold peace negotiations on the Middle East this fall
premature.
"We believe there will be an appropriate time for an international
conference, but we are not at that stage now and I don't expect that
we will be there by the fall," Reuters quoted White House spokesman
Scott McClellan as saying.
"We appreciate President Putin's commitment to the 'road map'.
Russia is a valued member of the quartet," McClellan said. "We need
to continue to focus our efforts on the disengagement plan. We all need
to do what we can to support the Palestinian leaders as they move
forward to put the institutions in place for a viable democracy to
emerge."
The press secretary of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Mark Regev, said
"Israel will not be against an international conference that will
correspond to the roadmap plan." But he added there is "much to be
done" before such a conference is possible. He said the sides of the
Middle East conflict "have not yet reached " the appropriate stage
of the peace settlement to hold negotiations.
During his visit to Egypt on Wednesday, Putin said he would discuss the
peace conference proposal with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
Putin later went to Israel on the first ever visit of a Russian leader
to this country. "I am suggesting that we should convene a conference
for all these countries concerned [with the Mid-East peace process] and
the quartet [Russia, the United States, the European Union and the
United Nations], next autumn," Putin said. He added that foreign
ministers of the quartet would meet in Moscow on May 8 to discuss the
Middle East peace process.
The Palestinian minister in charge of negotiations with Israel, Saib
Arikat, supported Putin's conference, saying it would help prepare
for final status negotiations following a cease-fire agreement and
Israeli withdrawals from Gaza and some of the West Bank.
