U.S. reports discovery of sarin, mustard gas
Could be among WMD Saddam hid from inspectors

Two separate discoveries of chemical weapons, possibly among the weapons of
mass destruction Saddam hid from inspectors, were reported today in Iraq by
U.S. officials.
The Iraq Survey Group, assigned the task of searching for WMD, confirmed a
roadside bomb that exploded Saturday near a U.S. military convoy in the area of
Baghdad International Airport contained sarin nerve agent.
Also, a senior Bush administration official told Fox News U.S. military units
two weeks ago discovered mustard gas that was used as part of an improvised
explosive device, or IED.
The Iraqi Survey Group and others believe the mustard gas shell could have been
one of the 550 for which ousted Iraq President Saddam Hussein failed to account
shortly before the Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt told reporters the sarin shell belonged to a class of
ordnance the Saddam regime said was destroyed before the 1991 Gulf war.
"It was a weapon that we believe was stocked from the ex-regime time and it had
been thought to be an ordinary artillery shell set up to explode like an
ordinary IED and basically from the detection of that and when it exploded, it
indicated that it actually had some sarin in it," Kimmitt said.
Tests on the mustard gas concluded it was "stored improperly," which made the
gas "ineffective," Fox News said.
Investigators are trying to find out how insurgents obtained the chemical
weapons.
Apparently, however, the bombmakers were unaware the devices contained the
chemical agents.
No serious injuries were reported after the sarin incident, but two people were
treated for "minor exposure."
The discovery came about when soldiers transporting the shell for inspection
suffered symptoms consistent with low-level chemical exposure, according to Fox
News.
Administration officials told the network some top Pentagon officials were
surprised by the announcement of the sarin discovery, believing the matter was
classified.
Network military analyst Lt. Gen. Tom McInerney commented: "Everybody knew
Saddam had chemical weapons, the question was, where did they go.
Unfortunately, everybody jumped on the offramp and said 'well, because we
didn't find them, he didn't have them.'"
David Kay, the previous head of the Iraq Survey Group, said it appears the
sarin shell was one of tens of thousands produced for the Iran-Iraq war,
according to the Associated Press.
United Nations resolutions required Saddam to destroy or turn over the weapons
to the United Nations, but in many cases, Kay said, Iraq did comply.
"It is hard to know if this is one that just was overlooked - and there were
always some that were overlooked, we knew that - or if this was one that came
from a hidden stockpile," Kay said. "I rather doubt that because it appears the
insurgents didn't even know they had a chemical round."
Even though the discovery shows Saddam did not fully comply with the U.N., Kay
said, "It doesn't strike me as a big deal."
Hans Blix, the former U.N. weapons inspector, said today that before the war,
his team found 16 empty warheads marked for use with sarin.
The sarin gas, he said, according to the AP, could have been from a leftover
shell found in a chemical dump.
"It doesn't sound absurd at all," he said. "There can be debris from the past
and that's a very different thing from have stocks and supplies."
Sarin-type agents constituted about 20 percent of all chemical weapons agents
that Saddam Hussein's government declared it had produced, according to U.N.
weapons inspectors, the AP reported.

I wonder when they will either guard the scattered munitions dump facilities or
gather tehm in the same place for processing... It is the only way to prevent
any loser on an al jazirah pwer trip from blowing up people. These dumps, along
with the propaganda (which they should also address), are the biggest source of
violence in Iraq.

Shhhhh ... they didn't send enough troops to do that. But in the meantime,
since North Korea no longer poses a threat with it's nukes, Bush is
redeploying troops from S.Korea to Iraq. We don't want to see a draft until

Really?
Funny, I don't recall NK invading two nations, nor do I recall NK launching
missiles into 6 nations, nor do I recall NK using Chemical weapons against its
own people and neighbors.
Now, do you you still think he's crazier than Saddam?

Yes I agree. It was not expected. I guess it could have been better planned.
They probably didn't think that the morons would loot their own countries. It
was miscalculation. Would have required more troops though. You can never know
eveything in advance. but yes, if they should have known better, which is not
certain, then something should be done to see who is to blame. Not sure about
this. When they attacked Serbia, say, there was no such looting... This remains
to be determined but maybe they should know better with Muslim states...

But it *should* have been expected, and planned for. Once the fighting was

You can blame Rumsfeld for the poor planning - he overruled Powell and a couple

I don't know about that. They constantly work on scenario for conflicts all over
eh world. My guess is that they planned to take care of that into lot more
military struggle, and never expected they would be getting in like a hot knife
into butter. And that all the soldiers would just give up and become part of the
terrorists.
See, in military scenarios this is not even int he Geneva convention as it is
unprecedented that the whole army deserts rather than fight. And then become the
mob who keeps looting or destroying the country.
Of course it is easy to judge with hindsight 20/20.
But reality, much like with 9-11, shows we never know what may happen (btw,
whether the parents of the victims of 9-11 or those of people like Berg, can all
kiss my ***** if they blame the US instead of the fucking terrorists)...
This would not happen without these fanatics.
But yes, nonetheless, they should probably have projected that possibility. And
surely will know better next time (yeah, I know, WHAT next time? this is just
rhetorical LOL).

I agree.
I wanted to punch Sen. Bob Kerry as he sat there Wednesday at the 9-11 hearings
berating Rudy Guliani for being angry with the Terrorists, and saying that such
anger leads to hatred and that not only Americans were attacked on 9-11.
This punk of Senator should have been dragged out of those hearings and kicked
out of the Senate for his cluelessness.

Didn't watch, but I seem to recall that Bob Kerry has said some pretty dumb
stuff before, hasn't he?

Not gonna happen. If "cluelessness" were grounds for senators to get kicked out
of Congress, they'd all be in trouble!

Many other things also contributed to the unexpected situation besides what I
mention in the preceding post, Woods. And yes, Tony, he did act like a demon.
I should have underlined that the insanity of letting all the common law
prisoners out of jail before the invasion contributed to making Iraq hell even
if there hadn't been an invasion and even if the army hadn't deserted into
becoming civilian covert renegades. But the incredible betrayal of not only the
Arab world, but our pseudo allies, contributed as well to foment and recruit
foreign fighters join with Alqaeda to defend the tyrant's forces against the
liberators, by turning their mission around in the mind of brainwashed Muslims.
This was a situation totally unprecedented. No one in his right mind would do
something like Saddam did to begin with. Or France.
The consequences of this couldn't well be planned in advance. Without this
craziness things would have been completely different.
Everything went wrong in that war even though they had all the authority, all
the justification, and all the good will in the world.
I don't know what Kerry could have done better whatever he says. Wait for more
consensus? At what cost then? Wait for another UN resolution like they have
always done until 1441 would have made he UN last chance resolutions totally
irrelevant. No, this was a betrayal by pseudo-allies. I wonder even what France
still does in NATO. It should be booted. But I digress.
