U.S. soldiers killed as Iraqi attacks surge
Concerns increasing that insurgents might again be refocusing strikes
on Americans.
BAGHDAD, Iraq -- A car bomb exploded Tuesday next to a U.S. Army convoy
in Baghdad, killing three soldiers. A half-hour later, another U.S.
soldier, sitting in the back of a Bradley fighting vehicle at an
observation post, was killed in a drive-by shooting.
Their deaths pushed the number of U.S. troops killed in three days to
14, part of a surge in attacks that also have killed about 60 Iraqis.
Eighteen U.S. troops have been killed in Iraq during the past week,
raising concerns that insurgents might again be focusing their sights
on U.S. forces.
More than 620 people, including 58 U.S. troops, have been killed since
April 28, when insurgents launched a bloody campaign after Prime
Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari announced his new Shiite-dominated
government. The AP count is based on reports from police, hospital and
military officials.
During the same period, at least 89 car bombs have killed least 355
people, according to the AP count. An additional five suicide bombings
by individuals wearing explosives have killed at least 107 people.
Today, about 1,000 U.S. Marines, sailors and soldiers encircled the
Euphrates River city of Haditha in the troubled Anbar province, killing
at least three insurgents after launching the second major operation in
this vast western region in less than a month, an official said.
Two Marines also were wounded and evacuated, Marine Capt. Christopher
Toland said.
Helicopters swept down near palm tree groves, dropping off Marines who
blocked off one side of Haditha, while other troops on foot and in
armored vehicles established checkpoints and began moving toward the
center of this city, 140 miles northwest of Baghdad. U.S. warplanes
circled overhead.
The assault, called Operation New Market, focused on this city of about
90,000 people. Earlier this month insurgents launched a multistage
attack from a Haditha hospital, killing four U.S. troops.
On Tuesday, Sunni and Shiite clerics and politicians intensified
efforts to find a way out of the crisis that threatens a civil war.
Senior officials representing Iraq's two leading Sunni Muslim
organizations met with Interior Minister Bayan Jabr. The Sunni
officials recently demanded Jabr's resignation, holding his office
responsible for the killings of Sunni clerics and others.
Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim, a prominent Shiite politician, said there would be
no civil war. "The awareness of the Iraqi people and the links between
them will prevent such a war, God willing."
Al-Hakim, who leads the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in
Iraq and the governing United Iraqi Alliance, said insurgents had been
trying to start a civil war between the Shiite majority and the Sunni
minority since Saddam Hussein's ouster.

Hard to do, but rest assured that had Saddam remained in power as most
Liberals on this group would have liked, there would have been many
more bodies in those mass graves that have been found all over Iraq.
Many more women would have been raped and tortured by Udai and his
thugs.
You know, I think some of these Liberal women fantasize about being
taken by Udai and are sad that they will never have the chance.

Better Iraqis than Americans. Only self-loathing, anti-Americans prefer
to have Americans get killed instead of Iraqis who refused to get rid of
the thug themselves. They have arms, they could have used them,
themselves.

Well, that's quite a fantasy you've come up with there. You must have
had being taken by Udai on your mind for quite a while to post something
like that here.

Those arms were no match for Saddam's. Taking out Saddam definitely
required external help.
As far as American casualties, note that Americans are themselves
better off by living in a world without Saddam in power. American
servicemembers have volunteered to risk
their life for their country. They were not drafted. It is like a
firefighter running into someone else's burning house to save a
stranger.

Anyone with common sense knows this, Liberals however are lacking in
this department.

The seppo's didn't join WWII voluntarily
Well even if Pearl Harbor hadn't forced the United States to help stop
the Axis, the United States still would have joined eventually. In
such a case, Charles Lindbergh and Pat Buchanan (if he flew back in a
time machine) would have considered joining anti-american. But in fact
it was the most american thing of all to help stop the axis. Saying "oh
it's not americans who are dying so who cares" wouldn't fly.
Regarding the WW2 draft, plenty joined voluntarily, without being
drafted. And this before Pearl Harbor when war was imminent even
without pearl harbor. Would you consider such voluntary joining
anti-american since "it's not americans who are dying"
(pre-pearlharbor)
That's assuming "seppos" means the GIs? Or am I misinterpreting what
"seppos" means?
