Army Trying to Keep Troops From Leaving
WASHINGTON (AP) - About 7,000 U.S. soldiers in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan who were planning to retire or otherwise leave the
service in the next few months are getting new marching orders: Stay put.
The Army is expanding what it calls a "stop loss" order to keep soldiers in uniform - even those who have met their contractual
service obligation or are scheduled to retire - during a rotation of tens of thousands of troops that begins this month and is
scheduled to finish in May.

They did stop loss when we went into the Balkans as well, and that was under
Clinton. As a former soldier, I can say I thought of it as being not such a
major event, though it may make some people angry. I do not like Clinton
much, but stop loss was not something I blamed on him, and I certainly did
not think it invoked the connotations of "soldiers being held captive."
Your kind do the right wing a great service, crying wolf over all these
trivial things, puffing them up like mad. Should they ever really want to
do something "bad" they will need only point at laugh at the "loony left
making wild accusations again."

Well, *DUH*.
You join the military, you run the risk of having them do this sort of thing
during wartime. What's your point? And how many of these are taking the
$10,000 incentive mentioned vs. being "forced" to stay? That might actually
be interesting.

What happens if Bush gets his way and he brings back the draft? How does
the idea of being enslaved into the military for the rest of your life
appeal to you?

Calm down, don't be so dramatic. How do we get from having one's tour

Our sons and daughters are forced into becoming cannonfodder slaves for
the greater glory of Bush and Haliburton. How republican.
And if Bush gets his way, YOU will be drafted in a few years from now
and be forced to fight and fight and fight until you are dead. No hope
to be free again. Just another combat droid in an endless war for
billionaires to profit from your toil, and a metal casket for you to
look forward to (which will be billed to your family, of course).
It's time to SERIOUSLY start thinking about voting for Howard Dean if
you want this nightmare to stop from happening, people! I'm not joking!
Only a monsterously demonic ***** who hates freedom would vote for
Bush in 2004.

If it were this easy, it would have been done by now. I

Yes, they attack, and they get bombed and coraled into

But this is a gross generalization. Most of the arab world

We should talk more specifically about a given arab region

Army Trying to Keep Troops From Leaving

WASHINGTON (AP) - About 7,000 U.S. soldiers in Iraq, Kuwait and
Afghanistan who were planning to retire or otherwise leave the service
in the next few months are getting new marching orders: Stay put.

The Army is expanding what it calls a "stop loss" order to keep
soldiers in uniform - even those who have met their contractual
service obligation or are scheduled to retire - during a rotation of
tens of thousands of troops that begins this month and is scheduled to
finish in May.

I heard it was more than 7,000. The article I read must have
been from several weeks ago. I think its more like all US
Service People considering retirement, could be in the
tens of thousands.
No doubt about it, we're stretched thin militarily. We've
got troops in dozens of countries around the world.
30,000 troops on the dmz in korea. Another 220,000 in iraq.
I think I counted our standing military recently at about
3 million, roughly 1% of our population. You might compare
this to China's standing military of 200 million, about
20% of their population.

If you decide to start any more wars, the only soldiers you'll
have left in the US will be your Hitler Youth.

Your estimates are high, and would be for all branches
of your military, including Navy Air Force, Marines, Army.
Probably closer to 2.4 million
The bulk of China's PLA are combat-ready soldiers, ie,
they are ready/willing/able to go into a fight, using
whatever weapons they've been trained with.
Most of your military is made up of office workers,
service workers, cooks, technicians, social butterflys
who are barely better able to act as hardscrabble warriors,
than the average citizen on the street.
Only 1 in 20 members of the US military are true
warriors, who could be put into a fight and be
reasonable reliable and effective.

entertaining is that the clueless "MarkTyme" doesn't even realize what
a dunce he is.
