The US State Department warned Americans traveling to Paris to avoid =
areas rocked by rioting for more than a week.=20
"This is an issue that very clearly the French government is dealing =
with," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.=20
"This is a matter for the French government and the French people to =
address," he added.=20
He made no further comment on the rioting that has engulfed the capital =
and surrounding area.=20
Meanwhile, the US embassy in Paris published a warning on its website =
aimed at Americans living in Paris or visiting the city.=20
"Although the riots have occurred in areas not normally frequented by US =
tourists, travelers should be aware that train travel from the Charles =
de Gaulle Airport to the city center may be disrupted at times, as it =
passes near the affected area. Travelers could rely instead on airport =
buses or taxis to downtown Paris," it said.=20
The embassy recommended that Americans avoid the affected areas, which =
include the northern suburbs of Seine-Saint-Denis -- notably =
Clichy-sous-Bois, Aulnay-sous-Bois and Le Blanc-Mesnil -- and Trappes in =
the southwest of Paris.=20
Americans "should move quickly away from any demonstrations that they =
may encounter," it said.=20
Noting that the riots had spread to other parts of France, such as the =
cities of Dijon and Marseille and the province of Normandy, the embassy =
advised travelers to closely monitor news media reports.=20
French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin and Interior Minister =
Nicolas Sarkozy held a crisis meeting Friday on the riots, which were =
headed into their ninth straight night.=20
Gangs of youths have gone on the rampage since October 27, when two =
teenagers were electrocuted in a tough, low-income suburb north of Paris =
as they hid in an electrical sub-station to flee a police identity =
check.=20
The riots have spread each night, eventually surrounding Paris then, =
overnight Thursday, flaring also in Marseille, Dijon and in Normandy -- =
and even in central parts of the capital itself.=20
Overwhelmed police have found themselves powerless to stop the =
conflagration, which has seen over 1,000 vehicles torched and more than =
200 people arrested amid fears that the country's racial and social =
divisions were fueling the violence, the worst seen since a 1968 student =
revolt.=20

What's with this Administration and its proclivity for waiting days and
days before doing anything? Day 7 is a tad late to start the process of
warning people ...

As did Helen of Troy, Cleopatra, Florence Nightingale, and Mary. You do
realize that shaving of body hair on US women was created by the razor
blade industry to increase their sales, right? Women are not naturally
free of body hair ...

So you advocate a woman mutilating herself in order to fulfill a male ideal,
yet get all het-up about Burkhas. A degree of hypocrisy I've now come to
expect from you..

Oh, please...exactly how is removing body hair mutilation? I don't do it
for a "male ideal", but because I find it un-hygenic (traps odours, etc).
BTW, Muslims of both sexes remove all body hair, for the same reason,
cleanliness.

You're desire to eradicate the pleasant, natural odours and replace them
with artifical perfumes is evidence of your desire to conform to the male
ideal.

BTW, Muslims of both sexes remove all body hair,

That is quite clearly absolute bollocks.

As you would say, bollocks! No where did I mention perfume, you are making

In answer to the question "Are women allowed to shave her (sic) legs?"
"Yes, women are allowed to shave their legs. Not only are they allowed but
women should shave any body hair that interferes with hygiene and
appearence."
And this long instruction about cleanliness:
"Physical Purity means cleanliness of the body, clothing and the enviroment.
According to the rules of Islam, Muslims should keep their bodies and
clothing clean from any impurity. Impurity is excretion from anything human
or animalistic.
It is a must for humans to wipe off the last drops of urine from their
bodies with tissue paper and to not allow specks of dried feces to cling to
any parts of their bodies, even on clothing. After wiping with tissue paper,
Muslims should find water and wash away thoroughly all the impurities on
them. Also applying to this rule are semen discharges and ejaculations.
Muslims should wash away any and all discharges received from animals during
play, etc. This includes the saliva from dogs on the human body, clothing,
or on dishes used by humans for food. Also considered impure is unnecessary
hair on the body.
Hair of the underarms and pubic area is considered unnecessary and
undesirable and should be removed regularly. Circumsicion for Muslims is
strongly recommended because of its health advantages such as cleanliness
and reducing the risk of cancers in that area of the body. It is not
required or recommended for Muslim women to do the same though"

This must be just one, liberal/progressive, interpretation of Islam.
Many Muslims believe in female circumcision, based on Hadiths. Genital
mutilation of females is a huge problem in the ME and Africa.

You are right there, but islamonline.net is a website of mainly scholars
from the West, so that could be the difference. Many of the female
circumcision traditions predate Islam, anyway.
the point of the post was the body hair removal. tw said I was full of it,
so I had to post a cite (there are many more on the 'net). The guy I worked
with told me they removed all body hair. For some reason, Mohammed cursed
women who plucked their eyebrows, so Muslim women are supposed to leave that
hair alone (not all do, of course).

was eating, the master of all kebabs (yes, he is that good) told me he
used to put something between his legs that made all hair fall of within

Yep. but even though I gave tw cites, he will still not admit that he was

Guys are much more hairy than women, and nobody ever makes derogatory

Frankly, I don't mind a little hair on a guy, but I don't like really hairy
guys, either. I dated a bodybuilder in university who shaved. That was,
admittedly, kind of wierd.
