Vatican denies hiding the full truth about the end of the worldRichard

The Vatican tried yesterday to draw a line under a conspiracy theory
that has dogged the Catholic Church for decades =E2=80=93 that it was
harbouring details of the predicted apocalypse.
The Pope=E2=80=99s second-in-command, Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio
Bertone, denied that the Church was suppressing a vision of the end of
the world said to have been revealed by the Virgin Mary to three
shepherd children on a hillside at Fatima in Portugal exactly 90 years
ago.
The three =E2=80=9CSecrets of Fatima=E2=80=9D were written down by one of t=
he
children, Lucia Dos Santos =E2=80=93 who became a Carmelite nun =E2=80=93 a=
nd sent to
the Vatican in a sealed envelope. Two of the =E2=80=9Csecrets=E2=80=9D were=
made
public, apparently predicting the inferno of 20th-century world war
and totalitarianism and the eventual reconversion of Communist Russia
to Christianity.
Pope John Paul II suggested that the third =E2=80=9Csecret=E2=80=9D predict=
ed the 1981
attempt on his life. He failed to satisfy conspiracy theorists
however, with many accusing the Vatican of disclosing only part of the
last Fatima secret.
Antonio Socci, a Catholic journalist and author of The Fourth Secret
of Fatima, said that he had at first accepted John Paul=E2=80=99s explanati=
on.
His researches led him to believe however that the late Pope=E2=80=99s
revelation had been =E2=80=9Cpartial=E2=80=9D.
He said that the undisclosed portion of the =E2=80=9Csecret=E2=80=9D predic=
ted a
crisis of faith in the West and the collapse of the Church hierarchy
in the face of a tidal wave of =E2=80=9Capostasy and heresy=E2=80=9D. Marco=
Tosatti, a
Vatican watcher and author of The Prophecies of Fatima, also said that
the Vatican was believed to be =E2=80=9Chiding something=E2=80=9D so as =E2=
=80=9Cnot to alarm
millions of the faithful=E2=80=9D.
But yesterday, as tens of thousands gathered at Fatima, 130 kilometres
(81 miles) north of Lisbon, to mark the 90th anniversary of the
=E2=80=9Cvisions=E2=80=9D, Cardinal Bertone insisted that the idea that the=
secret
predicted =E2=80=9Ccatastrophic world events=E2=80=9D or the collapse of th=
e Christian
Church were =E2=80=9Cpure fantasy=E2=80=9D.
The cardinal has been fighting conspiracy theories involving the
Church, such as The Da Vinci Code, which he dismissed as a =E2=80=9Cpack of
lies=E2=80=9D. In The Last Fatima Visionary: My Meetings with Sister Lucia,
Cardinal Bertone says that before her death in 2005 at the age of 97
the nun confirmed John Paul=E2=80=99s account of the =E2=80=9Cthird secret=
=E2=80=9D.
=E2=80=9CThere is no fourth secret,=E2=80=9D he declared. =E2=80=9CEverythi=
ng has been
published and correctly interpreted.=E2=80=9D He hinted that =E2=80=9CantiC=
hristians=E2=80=9D
were behind the conspiracy theories.
In a preface to Cardinal Bertone=E2=80=99s book, Pope Benedict XVI writes t=
hat
publication of the =E2=80=9Cthird secret=E2=80=9D by his predecessor =E2=80=
=9Cunveiled the
truth amid the confused framework of apocalyptic interpretations and
speculation in the Church=E2=80=9D.
Fatima visions
First secret

transparent burning embers, all blackened or burnished bronze . . . =E2=80=
