Melbourne, Katoomba rattled by quakes
Chris Evans
October 23, 2006 - 7:13AM
Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs were shaken by a mild earth tremor
late last night.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Fire Brigade said calls were received
from people in St Kilda, Brighton, Caulfield, Elsternwick, South Yarra
and Clayton reporting sounds of explosions and rattling windows over
three minutes from about 10.40pm.
The Country Fire Authority received calls from people in Dandenong
North and Narre Warren North, also reporting a deep thud and the sound
of explosions.
A spokesman for the authority at Dandenong said officers "heard the
rumble" and likened it to the sensation of "driving over a level
crossing".
A Caulfield resident, Martin Szwarc, was lying in bed when he heard
what sounded like three explosions.
"I thought maybe a car hit the front gate or something because the
whole place shook. It went bang, bang, bang with enough force to nearly
knock me out of bed."
A spokesman for Victoria Police said calls had been received over a
wide area but callers had been referred to Geoscience Australia.
Geoscience Australia said it received several calls from the public
about the tremor reporting shaking and noises.
A duty seismologist, Phil Cummins, said it had been a "small quake".
"It was certainly felt from Dandenong all the way down toward the
Mornington Peninsula," he said.
The magnitude 2.5 earthquake was recorded at 10.36pm last night. It
prompted a flood a calls.
It was big enough to send a shudder through buildings, Dr Cummins said,
but the quake appears to have done little more than rattle window
panes.
He said the epicentre was just north of the Melbourne suburb of
Dandenong, in the city's south-east, and it would have been felt over
about a 50-kilometre radius.
He said Geoscience Australia had not received any reports of damage and
that none were expected.
Katoomba quake
Residents of Katoomba in the Blue Mountains reported a quake that
lasted for about 20 seconds shortly after 7pm yesterday.
A Geoscience Australia spokeswoman said the tremor did not register as
a significant event.
Early indications were that it was an aftershock from a magnitude four
earthquake that struck the NSW Central West town of Wyangala, about
halfway between Bathurst and Young, on Saturday night.
