World War III =E2=80=94 the Russian saga continues
Brent Battle
Opinion Columnist
The Cold War never ended. Technically, it ended for Russia, but the
battle continues to be waged in Washington.
This is what Stephen F. Cohen argues in a July issue of =E2=80=9CThe
Nation=E2=80=9D magazine. As a professor of Russian studies at New York
University, Cohen writes: =E2=80=9CThe only true vital American interest in
Russia today is preventing its stockpiles of mass destruction from
endangering the world.=E2=80=9D
The Cold War should=E2=80=99ve never happened, argues James Carroll in his
book titled, =E2=80=9CHouse of War: The Pentagon and the Disastrous Rise of
American Power.=E2=80=9D After World War II, all but one member of Harry
Truman=E2=80=99s cabinet, Defense Secretary James Forrestal, wanted to share
U=2ES. nuclear technology with Russia. Carroll writes Forrestal=E2=80=99s
philosophical approach to the Soviet Union, which gained the approval
of Truman, was founded in part by paranoia. Forrestal committed suicide
in 1949 and many events since =E2=80=9Creinforced the profitable insecuriti=
es
of the military-industrial complex,=E2=80=9D Carroll writes.
Politicians, scholars and the media argue the Cold War ended 15 years
ago with the collapse of the U.S.S.R. In 1973 the Soviet leader Leonid
Brezhnev told President Richard Nixon the U.S.S.R. would undoubtedly
lose the Cold War. President George H. W. Bush and the often drunken
Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev declared in 1989 the Cold War
ended.
The great threat of the post-World War II era never disappeared. We
didn=E2=80=99t fear the Marxist philosophies or communist ideologies as much
as we feared the dreaded nuclear bomb. The two super powers boasted
policies of mutual assured destruction, where if one nation bombs the
other, the attacked will unload its arsenal, sending the planet into a
nuclear winter.
Those weapons still exist, and any hostility between the two nations
should not be taken as a joke.
The fact our leaders in Washington continue Cold War tactics is no
surprise. The Cold War was and remains the model for the War on Terror,
and billions of dollars in contracts are to be made in providing
military defense.
The Middle East contains the world=E2=80=99s largest known petroleum
reserves. Iraq holds the second largest oil reserve in the world. It
was likely had the U.S. not intervened in Iraq, Saddam Hussein
would=E2=80=99ve assisted greatly in helping with the industrialization of
China and Russia. Squelching China and Russia is how we =E2=80=9Cwon=E2=80=
=9D the
Cold War.
A national intelligence estimate leaked recently states the Iraq War is
not helping in the War on Terror. It is only making the situation
worse. Russia, the world=E2=80=99s largest supplier of weapons to the world,
is likely assisting more greatly than we are lead to believe.
Although they claim to be against jihadism and radical Islam movements,
they keep their fragile economy afloat with this fight by selling
weapons to terrorists.
Russia and China issued a statement in 2005 stating they oppose the
U=2ES.-led coalition to invade Iraq. Bush vehemently denies the Iraq War
is hurting the War on Terror, claiming we are fighting =E2=80=9Cthem=E2=80=
=9D over
=E2=80=9Cthere.=E2=80=9D And despite the best efforts the change the course=
and
=E2=80=9Ccut and run,=E2=80=9D Bush will not do anything to plan for withdr=
awing
troops from Iraq.
Maybe there is something greater about this war of ideas they call the
War on Terror. Maybe Bush is right, that we will continue fighting them
over there, but =E2=80=9Cthey=E2=80=9D will change from terrorists to Russi=
ans or
Chinese.
We=E2=80=99ve been told terrorists represent no nation or region. They can
strike any where at any time, possibly with a nuclear weapon. While
both U.S. and Russia hold strategic interests in the Middle East, we
find the decay of diplomatic ties and peace growing with each year the
U=2ES. remains in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Using our Cold War philosophy to fight the War on Terror may show
itself to be a bad decision. We, as a democracy, should seriously
reconsider our handling in world affairs and urge Bush to be more open
to new ideas and directions. Or at least ask his administration to be
more truthful with our purpose for staying in Iraq.
Staying in Iraq to ward off Russia and China from rapidly
industrializing seems to make the most sense as our reason for staying.
Why are we not told this? Is the average Joe=E2=80=99s role in securing the
Middle East about to increase dramatically?
