Terrorists planned to observe the celebrated birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas
Day with a 9-11-style attack on the Vatican, according to Italian prime
minister Silvio Berlusconi.
"A hijacked plane into the Vatican. ... An attack from the sky, is that clear?"
Berlusconi is quoted as saying in the Milan newspaper Libero. "The threat of
terrorism is very high in this instant. I passed Christmas Eve in Rome to deal
with the situation. Now I feel calm. It will pass."
According to the paper, the premier said news of the attack on Rome was
"precise and verified." He offered no details about where the information came
from.
"It isn't fatalism, but the knowledge of having our guard up. If they organized
this, they will not pull it off," he added, according to Libero.
Berlusconi reportedly said word of a Christmas Day plot followed information in
November of a planned attack on subways in Milan and Rome.
"There were those who insisted that the stations be closed," Berlusconi is
quoted as saying. "I took on myself the responsibility for avoiding certain
measures. They would had the same effect on the minds of people as an attack;
they would have killed us inside, with dramatic social and economic
consequences. Terrorism wants to make us close up. I preferred to double up the
safety checks."
Reuters reports Berlosconi later denied making the statements attributed to him
by the daily, and accused its reporter of making up the quotes.
"Premier Silvio Berlusconi gave no interview. One cannot confuse a quick
exchange of Christmas greetings with political declarations," a statement
released from his office read.
The Associated Press reports the Vatican would not comment on the possible
Christmas threat, but has tightened security in recent weeks amid terror
warnings.
Christmas Mass was heavily guarded and pilgrims entering the basilica passed
through metal detectors.
