Verse translation
Put down the well-to-do shall quickly be:
By brothers three the world is sorely troubled.
The foes shall seize each city of the sea:
Hunger, fire, blood and plague - all ills redoubled.
The catastrophic disintegration of the Carolingian empire following its
division by the treaty of Verdun of AD 843 between the three sons of
Charlemagne's heir Louis I - namely Louis the German, Charles the
Bald and Lothair I. While these 'three brothers' were busy fighting
it out among themselves, Western Europe was murderously attacked by
three other 'brothers' - the Vikings from the north, the
plundering Magyars from the east and the Muslim Saracens from the
south. The symbolic parallellism can hardly have escaped Nostradamus
- whence, presumably, the expression de tous maux le double in the
last line. The last of these invaders laid waste many Mediterranean
cities including Naples and Genoa - to such an extent that, when the
Vikings later reached the Mediterranean (sacking further maritime
cities such as Paris, Nantes and Toulouse on the way), they had to
penetrate even further inland to find anything worth sacking at all.

Line 1 is a very evocative reference to what happens to the
French nobility upon the Revolution. The three brothers of line 2
are a reference to the three Kings of France who ruled, one
before the Revolution, the other two afterwards: Louis XVI, Louis
XVIII and Charles X.

But the anagrams derived from VIII-17 not only refer to French
noblemen put in peril by the Revolution, but to all of Europe's
monarchies who were quite troubled by France's turmoil.
*
In line 4, Nostradamus cannot resist at hinting at the double
anagram hidden in his published text. In French, "& de to' maux
le double." sounds exactly like "& de to' mots le double". In one
case, it suggests "all ills redoubled". And in the other "all
words redoubled".

And the two missing letters from this "to'"? "US", of course, the
source of all ills falling upon Paris, on August 13, 2017, at
3:53 a.m.

Clever, eh, this Nostradam...US?!

This quatrain is an excellent example of the double words
Nostradamus is hinting at. One decyphered version speaks of the
French Revolution, the other -- as usual -- of the unintended
destruction of Paris:

--------- trembleront, la si grosse réuolte de France, -------
--------- mise en nostre cité parisienne, --------------------
--------- exécutant d'une rude lame Louis et sa Femme. -------

--------- bons amis (selon La Trémouille), après l'erreur ----
--------- mise en nostre cité parisienne ---------------------
--------- tout flambée d'ung atome, en Deux Mil Dix Sept. ----

And line 3 uses the very same decyphered text in both versions,
another clue to the brilliant mind who successfully hid these two
texts in his published poem.
*
The common point between the two? Both events happen on the Place
de la Concorde, hitherto known as the Place de la Révolution.
