Thanks, Wally.
I don't need guns. I can live without 'em. As far as I'm concerned
if you can meet a few criteria you can take and toss them all in the
ocean. Bear in mind that involves 85 million people tossing
300,000,000 firearms into the ocean. (I think those estimates are
incredibly low.)
It's wrong not to look at the underlying issues here. We can afford to
take meaningless action and miss the point.
Who would deny that there's been a decline in basic decency and
morality in this country? A loss of respect and regard for human life
and simple, basic nurture? Why? Movies? TV? Violent video games? The
emphasis on the almighty dollar and a neglect of heart? How about a
lying leadership that takes us into a war that costs hundreds of
thousands of lives and can't properly prepare for or respond to an
event like Katrina?
I've seen expert, informed speculation after reading his literature
that Cho had been molested. He'd scared his classmates, been taken
out of class and the police had been made aware of him. Why, after he
was known to have set a dorm room on fire and stalked women, wasn't
something done for him or to him?
In a sense we're all bleeding for 32 victims. We should be deeply
concerned about a 33rd death. Who are we as a society when we produce
someone like this then let him "fall thru the cracks"? Who are we as
a society when something like this happens, blame inanimate objects
and then, feeling much better about it, miss the entire point? Miss
the lessons that might actually make a difference and make us think
about ourselves.

I wish Bush would order that the national flag be flown at half-staff
until the US Congress removes Cheney and him from office, and Congress
ends the killing field in Iraq. The nation should be perpetually mourning,
not sporadically for tragic isolated events like the Virginia Tech
massacre, and not merely for those military and civilian deaths and
injuries that could be stopped (and, in fact, never have started), but
also for its moral weakness in permitting such leaders and their policies
to continue while pathetically cracking jokes and bitching about them.
There's this sickeningly paradoxical environment at this moment that
demands we be reverent and soul-searching in a college mass murder, while
stumbling along, wasting lives in a very tragic Mideast war (while this
administration and the media beat war drums for yet another).
I wish the news media would, just once, not try to pin the increasing
amorality and immorality of our populace solely on the proliferation of
fantasy entertainment violence and the widespread ownership of weaponry.
And, instead, put the blame equally on their own business that exploits
and profits from showing violence of all kinds, glorifies state-sponsored
unnecessary warfare, and promotes war-mongeriing, fear-mongering leaders
for national office. But, I truly believe that if all these things could
be tempered, humanity would still be a violent creature, having found
other effective ways to perpetrate and perpetuate cruelty and violence.
Getting rid of the instruments of violence, and the exploitation and
glorification of it, won't, in itself, make this human beast a tame
kitten. The problems of inequality, greed, dominance, irrationality, et
al, reach far beyond the use of physical tools to facilitate this
behaviour. The solutions beg for a sea change in human behaviour, a
revelation and a revolution that needs universal, permanent application
daily. And how would that miracle come about? Does anyone know how that
could become our new reality?
Should we take each and every media-hyped case of violence and
collectively, obsessively lament our society not watching its 'free
citizens' with extreme attentiveness and forcibly intervening when some
authority deems appropriate? Should we have a 'big brother' police state,
or a civic assisted one, where each citizen is tracked, monitored in every
way, so that we can see the 'early warning signals' of a dangerously
unstable mind or lifestyle? And, if we did, what price do we need to pay
in sacrificing more of our privacy rights, and our basic right to be left
alone and pursue our lives in the manner we see fit (as long as it
respects the rights of others)? If we had that much higher surveillance
and security (as we have steadily increased for decades), even to the
utmost extreme, would we then have any real freedoms and rights left fight
wars for freedoms that no longer exist, and that we've always thought were
important to defend, kill, and die for?
How safe and sane can we make the human creature by laws and a high degree
of surveillance and aggressive intervention? And, to what end -- a
fascistic state, perhaps? A tyrannical arrogant authority that becomes
all-powerful and insanely abusive...and then where we will seek our
justice and protection? History is replete with such examples of tyranny
and its social impact.
No, I don't like the behaviour of much of what we are that makes us human,
but those who call for gun control or abolishment of guns ask us to rely
on a powerful, pervasive authority to protect us -- or else expect a
magical change will occur that progresses our species' behaviour to a
peaceful coexistence and mutual respectfulness.
When sniper Charles Whitman killed students and bystanders at the
University of Texas at Austin in 1966, the very same national arguments
occurred, as they do every damned time a tragic event like this occurs.
People said that morality was going down the toilet while a horrific
dead-end war raged in South Viet Nam, and civil disturbances erupted in
the city streets across America. It looked liked a preview of hell at
times. There were calls to ban weapons or at least greatly restrict them,
as the media and leaders again focused on a 'solution' of relying more on
a governmental authority to protect them than on protecting themselves.
Religious folks had a crazy field day, claiming that the nation was in
danger of being destroyed by communists, hippies, and leftists.
Intellectuals posited that western civilization might be on the verge of
collapse.

Australia toughened it's gun laws after the Port Arthur Massacre of

It would be a mistake if we didn't mine this tragedy for every lesson
possible. To simply blame guns is a cop out. A good way to get
caught up in emotion, make some meaningless changes then have it
happen all over again.
You won't get rid of guns in this country without a revolution
happening.
I'd agree that there needs to be a mechanism that brings past mental
problems up during state background checks. How to get the needed
information into a database shouldn't be all that hard. What defines
someone as being mentally untrustworthy can be worked out.
Cho obviously didn't qualify for a purchase permit for a number of
reasons.
We also need to look at ourselves and the diminishing morality we see
all around us as well as a diminishing respect for human life. The
weakness of that respect starts in the White House and works it's way
down.
The NRA has blood on it's hands.
The emphasis should be put on the people who abused this young man and
the ones who failed to get him help and then protect the people around
him.
The police questioned Cho twice about physically stalking women and
then harassing a woman online. He'd been admitted to an institution
for observation. He had been frightening his classmates. There were
clues, obviously, in his "creative writing". He'd been segregated
from other students and his problems made aware to the administration.
The most troubling thing of all was the dorm room he's reported to
have set on fire.
In the large, rather famous university just down the road from me a
student was expelled from school because he left his dorm room with a
candle burning. It caught some furnishings on fire. An accident but
he was given just enough time to pack up his belongings and go.
"Someone" else as VT wasn't doing a very good job of dealing with
reality.
