Sorry, guys, I've got a day off today. :-)
Lou Dobbs commentary.

"A 2005 Government Accountability Office report on electronic voting
confirmed the worst fears of watchdog groups and election officials. That
report said, "There is evidence that some of these concerns have been
realized and have caused problems with recent elections, resulting in the
loss and miscount of votes."
That is simply unacceptable. Congress and the White House need to
immediately take steps to assure the integrity of electronic voting with
paper trails that could be audited in any recount, or provisions must be
made for paper ballots if the reliability of e-voting cannot be assured
before November 7.
When voters lose confidence in our elected representatives, we can vote the
bums out. But what is the recourse if American voters lose confidence in our
electoral system?"
I'd say an old fashioned, patriotic, armed insurrection would be possible.

It hasn't come to that... yet. We still have paper ballots where I live, tallied
by optical scanner which is a standalone unit with custom made connecters for
downloading so they'll be harder to hack in transit. I've worked elections
here, and have a high confidence in the results. I wouldn't use a Diebold
though, too many crashes and bad data errors as well as an easy hack, being
networked in use. If your state uses Diebold paperless E-voting machines, demand
an absentee ballot for the election in November. That way there will be a paper
record of your vote. Tell your state legislature that whining about the co$t of
elections is just the cost of doing business; suck it up and write the checks,
or learn a new catch phrase... You want fries with that?

I was only being a little facetious. :-)
Good to have you and your wide expertise around, Charlie. Glad to see you

This has been known for quite a while among the geeky set. They are
easily cracked, by multiple methods. That's what happens when you got with
proprietary software - easy to crack by hackers, and security experts from
outside the company can't check them to make sure they're secure. (Yeah,
we'll take the word of a company that got the contract with little/no
oversite ... NOT!)

And it's been reported that the CEO of Diebold said before the last election
he'd do anything to get Mr. Bush re-elected.

Well, unless they're caught and you happen to have a significant
investment in the company, that is. (Shades of Enron ....)
