February 16, 2005 -- Wacko Jacko was on his backo in a hospital bed
yesterday with a bad case of the flu that halted jury selection in his
child-molestation case.
The pop star began vomiting in the car on his way to court and was
rerouted to a hospital emergency room about two miles away.
"I saw him over the weekend and told him not to come to court, but he
insisted on going," said Jackson's brother Randy.
"I said, 'Michael, if you're sick, you're sick.' But he came to court
anyway."
Jacko's lawyer, Tom Mesereau, said the 46-year- old singer told him
over the phone in the morning that "he was very ill."
Judge Rodney Melville postponed jury selection until Tuesday, saying,
"He'll have ample time to get well."
Before Jackson's illness was announced in court yesterday, one
potential juror, apparently annoyed by the wait, complained, "Six
months of this?"
After learning of Jackson's health woes, dozens of diehard fans flocked
to the small Marian Medical Center, where he was being treated. Police
guarded entrances, and hospital workers draped white sheets around the
emergency room.
Emergency-room doctor Chuck Merrill said Jackson was undergoing testing
and being rehydrated with intravenous fluids.
"We expect a full recovery," Merrill added. "Once he's stable, he'll go
home."
Jackson's illness came a day after his defense unveiled a stunning
potential-witness list that included everyone from hoops star Kobe
Bryant to Liz Taylor, Jay Leno and even the singer's young accuser, a
former 13-year-old cancer patient.
The boy claims that Jackson plied him with alcohol and molested him at
his Neverland ranch in 2003.
