Syria last month hosted a wedding for the son of a Hamas leader and assisted
with security for the terrorists present at the event, even though Syrian
officials have denied harboring Hamas, security sources told WorldNetDaily.
The wedding, which took place Dec. 21 in Damascus, was for Khaled Marzouk, son
of Hamas leader Mussa Abu Marzouk, and Isara Ashi, daughter of the groom's
uncle, also a Hamas leader, said the sources. The guest list included overall
Hamas leader Khaled Meshal, who Syria has denied harboring, Islamic Jihad chief
Ramadan Salah and Talal Naji, commander of the Popular Front for the Liberation
of Palestine terror group, the sources said.
The sources said Syrian special forces helped to guard the wedding hall and
coordinate travel for the terrorist leaders. Meshal is on the top of Israel's
most-wanted list and has been operating openly from Damascus, where he
allegedly plans terror attacks and has given interviews to the media.
The wedding was reportedly brought up to Syrian officials at a meeting earlier
this month with representatives of the U.S. State Department.
The U.S. has expressed outrage with Syrian President Bashar Assad, accusing him
of aiding the insurgency against U.S. troops in Iraq and of harboring terrorist
groups, including Hamas.
Congress in May passed the Syria Accountability Act, banning all U.S. exports
to the Arab country except food and medicine and forbidding direct flights
between Syria and the United States.
The sanctions were imposed in response to allegations Damascus is supporting
terror groups, failing to stop anti-U.S. fighters from crossing into Iraq from
Syria, developing chemical and biological weapons, and occupying Lebanon.
U.S. officials have said they are contemplating further action against
Damascus. There have been some reports the U.S. has been considering military
incursions into Syria to stop the flow of militants into Iraq.
"When you're being attacked from safe havens across the border – we've been
through this a lot of times before – we're just not going to sit there," a
U.S. official told the Jerusalem Post.
Syria's ambassador to the U.N., Fayssal Mekdad, told WorldNetDaily in a recent
exclusive interview his country is not aiding the insurgency in Iraq.
"There is absolutely no ground for such allegations. ... On our side, we have
proposed several measures to seal the borders," said Mekdad.
Mekdad also denied Syria is harboring Hamas.
"The different Palestinian organizations have information offices in Damascus.
These organizations have voluntarily closed their offices some time ago after
the escalation of threats and pressure on Syria. These factions do not carry
out military actions from Syria and are not getting any support from Syria.
They are part and parcel of the Palestinian people," said Mekdad.
