Well, it's essential a ghost town now, Dave !
However, there would need to be a few people living there just to look
after the historic landmarks....
Walhalla in Central Gippsland, Victoria is another example of a town
that once had many
thousands of residents, pubs, stores, etc -- but is now just a tourist
attraction !
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walhalla%2C_Victoria
Walhalla is a small town in Victoria, Australia, founded as a
gold-mining community in the late 19th century and at its peak home to
around 3000 residents. The town has a 2005 population of around 20
permanent residents, though it attracts large numbers of tourists and
is a major focus of the regional tourism industry. The town's name is
taken from an early gold mine in the area, named for the German hall of
fame, the Walhalla temple (Valhalla from Norse legend).

Thurber, Texas

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search
Thurber, Texas, is a coal-mining ghost town in Texas located 75 miles
west of Fort Worth in Erath County.
Coal mining operations began in Thurber in 1886 and reached a peak
around 1918-1920, with a population of approximately 8,000 to 10,000.
At the peak, Thurber was one of the largest bituminous coal-mining
towns in Texas. Established as a company town, the mining operations in
Thurber were unionized in 1903 and Thurber became the first totally
closed shop town in the country. By 1920, conversion of locomotives
from coal to oil reduced demand and lowered prices and miners left the
area through the 20s. By 1935, Thurber was essentially a ghost town.
Nationwide, there are several thousands of people whose roots go back
to Thurber. Today, you can visit historical landmarks in Thurber such
as The Thurber Cemetery, which has over a thousand graves, the restored
St. Barbara's church, a restored and furnished coal miner's house, New
York Hill, and much more. A historic Thurber smokestack can clearly be
seen from a highway near Thurber. You can also visit The W.K Gordon
Center, a museum containing information on historical Thurber. You can
also visit the historic Smokestack Restaurant.

Officially, the smallest town in Australia is William Creek, with a
population of just 8 in the 2000 census, and only 5 in the current
census. Hope that help.s

Title: There U go, peoplez !!!!! The smallest incorporated town in the world iz Monowi, Nebraska, USA 28 Aug 2006 02:21:19 AM
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,11069-1490081,00.html
Introducing the mayor of Monowi: (population: 1)
By Tim Reid
Our correspondent meets the sole remaining resident =E2=80=94 and chief
librarian =E2=80=94 of a once thriving Nebraska town of farmers
WHEN it comes to civic duty, few Americans can compete with Elsie
Eiler. In Monowi, in northern Nebraska, she is the mayor, town clerk,
town treasurer, town secretary, tavern keeper and chief librarian. When
you are the sole resident of America=E2=80=99s smallest incorporated townsh=
ip
=E2=80=94 everybody else has either died or moved on =E2=80=94 the competit=
ion for
jobs is scarce.
Mrs Eiler, 71, whose husband died in 2001, halving Monowi=E2=80=99s
population, runs the one business left in town, a low-slung roadside
tavern. Last year she opened what has become the greatest source of
pride for the town board =E2=80=94 Mrs Eiler, that is =E2=80=94 a tiny libr=
ary,
which was the dying wish of her husband, who was a farmer and an avid
collector of books.
Drive towards Monowi and the vast, empty landscape =E2=80=94 giant stubble
fields punctuated by occasional grain silos =E2=80=94 overwhelms towns
struggling to withstand decades of population decline. That same slow
death is occurring across America=E2=80=99s rural heartland in the Midwest
and Great Plains.
As you drive, the town signs zip by: Maskell, population 54; Obert, 39;
Verdel, 12; and then, placed there before Mr Eiler=E2=80=99s death, Monowi,
2=2E
Monowi is an extraordinary sight. Surrounded by wild trees, old cars
and tonnes of junk sit about a dozen one-storey wooden houses, all
abandoned, some so long ago, between the world wars, that they are
close to collapse. It is utterly silent.
A rusting yellow school bus, stripped of wheels, engine and seats, sits
beside a decrepit one-room schoolhouse closed 40 years ago. Next to Mrs
Eiler=E2=80=99s tavern sits an old clapboard building =E2=80=94 filled with=
sacks
of rubbish =E2=80=94 that used to be one of the town=E2=80=99s two general =
stores
before they closed in the 1950s. The last event at Monowi=E2=80=99s
boarded-up Methodist Church was the funeral of Mrs Eiler=E2=80=99s father in
1960.
Inside the tavern, Mrs Eiler is reading a novel. =E2=80=9CI picked it up fr=
om
the library on the way home last night,=E2=80=9D she said. Her commute is a
short one. The library is 10 yards away, her home another 20.
At its peak, in the 1930s, Monowi was a thriving town of 150. The local
railroad, which ran from Norfolk, Nebraska, to Winner, South Dakota,
brought farmers and their families. But mechanisation put small farmers
out of business, the railway closed in 1971 and the town began to die.
Three years ago the last resident apart from the Eilers, an elderly
widow, moved away to live with her son.
Now Mrs Eiler is alone, dutifully carrying out administrative chores of
Kafkaesque absurdity. She grants her own liquor licence and collects
taxes from herself. Every year she must produce a municipal road plan
to receive Monowi=E2=80=99s share of state transport funds and a budget to
finance the town=E2=80=99s street lights =E2=80=94 all four of them.
She produced the Notice of Public Hearing that is posted in the tavern
window, announcing a public hearing =E2=80=9Cbefore the Village Board=E2=80=
=9D and
calling on the citizens of Monowi to voice =E2=80=9Csupport, opposition
and/or suggestions=E2=80=9D for the road plan. The meeting was quick. =E2=
=80=9CIt
was just for town residents,=E2=80=9D she said with a laugh.
Her son and daughter left years ago. =E2=80=9CIt=E2=80=99s a lack of being =
able to
make a living that=E2=80=99s killing these towns,=E2=80=9D she said. =E2=80=
=9CThe young
folk graduate and go to bigger places to get work. The small farmers
and businessman have been squeezed out.=E2=80=9D
The facts bear her out. In Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, North Dakota,
South Dakota and Iowa, 89 per cent of the 2,421 cities and towns have
fewer than 3,000 people. Hundreds have fewer than 1,000. Between 1996
and 2004, almost 500,000 people, nearly half with college degrees, left
the six states, which have a combined population of nine million.
=E2=80=9CRural flight=E2=80=9D has become so acute that some towns offer fr=
ee land
and tax breaks to entice newcomers.
But Mrs Eiler is not lonely. Her food is good, the beer is cold and
farmers and truck drivers travel as far as 80 miles to eat at her
tavern. When The Times visits, she serves lunch to a petrol deliveryman
and his wife, a couple from a nearby farm and her brother, Jim, who in
1956 moved to Verdel, the =E2=80=9Cbig town=E2=80=9D, population 52, seven =
miles
away. =E2=80=9CWhen I moved there, hell, Verdel even had a bank!=E2=80=9D h=
e said.
Mrs Eiler said that her son would love to take over the tavern, but
obtaining a fresh licence would require prohibitive renovation funds.
=E2=80=9CSome day Monowi will just be memories, and as the years go by, it
will probably turn to dust. But I like it here, and as long as I can
take care of myself, I=E2=80=99ll be staying,=E2=80=9D she said.
=20
