In 2002, I re-posted in this NewsGroup for the benefit of the
then newbies 128 articles originally posted years earlier. As
today's lurkers and newbies might not have had the opportunity to
search for them, here is #0006 of that series:

: Hi Claude,
: I just knew you would love that one :)
: The more I read the prophecies, the more I am inclined
: to agree with you. Reading other people's english
: translations AND the original in french shows me how
: the translators consciously or subconsciously (let's
: give'em some slack) "translate" their own interpretations
: into the quatrains.
:
[ some deletion ]

My main point is that - only if we understand a quatrain very well
(i.e., an after-the-fact quatrain) - can we state what it means in
modern French, and this statement CAN be correctly translated into
any other language... PROVIDED THAT the original is correct.
*
These poor Americans trying to *understand* Nostradamus using a
translation - any translation - are just wasting their time.
*
: For those asking for the "original english translations
: of N's work" I can honestly agree with you that they have
: coined the newest prophetic oxymoron. At best, the
: english quatrains will paint the reader a slim shadow of
: what the whole thing is all about.
:
: On a moonless night.
:
: So far I've tried as best as I could to translate the
: few quatrains I posted without embedding any subjective
: views, but it is extremely difficult. All of one's
: knowledge base tends to skew the final result. The best
: I can say about my translations is this: they were mine.
: b.f.d.[tm]
:
: Now for the worst part: I can say the same thing about
: any current french "translation" as well. Leoni,
: Defontbrune, etc... you name it, they all suck.
: (This latter implies the same thing about all the other
: french "exegetes")
*
Some are much better than others. Le Pelletier is the best, in my
view.
*
: But then, what are we doing with the prophecies?
: Re-writing them to fit our views?
: Or perhaps writing our own future?
*
We are writing our own past. Only quatrains of the past can be
reliably interpreted. And even that is difficult.
*
I try not to understand them to fit my views. But to discover
N's view of my past. How did *he* perceive these events?
*
: Do *you* really understand what each quatrain says?
*
No. Only a few. About a dozen. (This is excluding others, well
interpreted before me by a number of other writers.)
*
: Could you explain them to the hordes? Or are the
: quatrains the french equivalent of the Zen koans?
:
: What sayest thou, Latremouille...
*
I can only state what I have done with them during the last quarter
of century: read them, read what others have said of them, study
history to verify what they wrote, look at current events to see if
some new event might not be the subject of some 'new' quatrain,
eliminate those which have received a 'good' interpretation, and
concentrate on those who have not.
*
: <Throw the w.f.t. away>
: I've seriously considered that as well.
: Zoltan
*
I would definitely not do that. Too many past events of French
history have been (almost) clearly written by N. This cannot be
pure coincidence. And if he was right for the past, he would
logically be right for the future.
*
These are my current views on the original quatrains. Of course,
it would be nice if N. was to come back to tell us whether we are
right or wrong when we try to understand what he wrote. But since
there is no chance of that, we have to do it ourselves.
*
He gave us the tools to do it... Nostra-Damus... we give what is ours
to give... So, he gave us what we need to have, in order to understand
his writings. Enough said. Have a good day, all!

Now, wasn't that interesting! An actual discussion about
Nostradamus' prophecies. Goes to show that, when two people wish
to discuss that here, doesn't matter how many manic depressive
paranoid freaks attempt to destroy this NewsGroup, it doesn't
work.
*
Have a nice day, folks!
