Back in 1996, quatrain X-72 was already generating a lot of
interest among Nostradamus fans. This re-post of a re-post
illustrates my view of it three years before the fact:

: How did you come to that conclusion? I agree that a solar eclipse,
: or some other astronomical phenomena, may be what the quatrain is
: alluding to here. But the quatrain specifically gives the date July
: 1999, not August. Did you find a different translation of this
: quatrain which gives the date August 1999?

David, the text does speak of July 1999, agreed. Nostradamus
lived between 1503 and 1566. In his days, a Julian Calendar was
in use. The Gregorian Calendar only started in 1582 in some
countries, later in others.
*
We use the Gregorian Calendar, which displaces the end of July
1999 Julian into August 1999 Gregorian. The eclipse occurs in
July Julian, and August Gregorian. August 11, as a matter of
fact, before noon, across Northern France.

The last two lines of the verse are a mystery to me, but not the
first two.
*
And the word which gives a clue to the meaning of the verse is
ROY, which can also be (N)OYR, in anagram (one letter more or
less), which means black... and when something black comes from
the sky and causes fear, we have... a total solar eclipse...
across France!

Since then, two elements known only in 1999 gave some meaning to
the last two lines of X-72. In July 1999, the Duke of Angoulême
got married at church, resuscitating the name of King François I
of Angoulême (line 3); and two wars happened in 1999, one before,
and one after the August 11 eclipse (line 4). The one before:
NATO vs Milosevic; and the one after: Russia vs Chechnya,
round 2.

Clever, eh, this Nostradmaus?!

Have a nice day, folks!
