I'll bet you wouldn't even admit to being an animal.

I'll bet you wouldn't even admit to being an animal.

I have this argument with many of my friends from time to time...
I argue that humans are animals, and many of the worlds problems result from
our inability to see ourselves as such... I'm constantly confounded at the
number of people I generally consider extremely intelligent, who will deny
that we are simply animals with a superiority complex. We think we've more
right to this planet than another being that also exists here, and that
thinking is one of our greatest mistakes.
The problem I see with this attitude is that it detaches us from the earth,
and we no longer view it as our means of survival. Instead we've replaced
our hunting ground's with shopping centers, our drinking streams with Coke
dispensing machines, and our custodial nature with consumerism... it is
this culture of detachment that has resulted in our environments rapid
degradation, and yet we persist... we buy the latest general interest
magazine which tells us about the great new advancments in *****-wiping
technology, and we are convinced that we must have it, not considering the
environmental cost of the paper the ads are printed on nor the lack of need
for a better arsehole hygene system. It just doesn't cross most people's
minds.
To me, this spells the biggest flaw in humanity: we believe we are some
kind of devine manifestation, and apparently answer only to an unseen
mythical entity. In this thinking, it apparently doesn't matter what we do
with our time here on earth, because one day, said mythical entity will
swoop on down from the heavens and dissolve all the problems we have caused.
People who hold this belief, I question their morality, aswell as their
comprehension skills... from my own childhood bible studies, one of the
reoccuring themes that came up was the concept of not relying on God to
solve your troubles, instead rely on him for guidance to solve them
yourself. We need to be acountable for our actions in our own minds, not
rely on God to save us when *we* have completely destroy everything we rely
upon to survive. Our actions today will effect tomorrow, ad infinitum. In
order to have a habitable tomorrow, we need to create a hospitable today.
What was I talking about again?

Humans create definitions, and because we are the creator of definitions, we
are free to define ourselves in whichever way we want.
