What I found in discussions with current and former members of this
administration is that there is no agreed-upon strategic view of the
Iraq problem or the region.
<snip>
It would have been a great honor to serve this nation again. But after
thoughtful discussions with people both in and outside of this
administration, I concluded that the current Washington decision-
making process lacks a linkage to a broader view of the region and how
the parts fit together strategically. We got it right during the early
days of Afghanistan -- and then lost focus. We have never gotten it
right in Iraq.

Hey! I'll take the job!
Why not? You could get drunk and play crosswords all day, and
you still couldn't do a worse job then we've seen over these past
three years.
I'd say that expectations are "Low," but that would be the
understatement of the century!
Seriously. When what we've seen these past three years isn't
called "Failure" by your boss, how could you fail? People in a
coma couldn't do worse than Bush!
So, please submit me for the job of War Czar. I expect a salary
in the mid six-figures, at least, plus all the perks (jets & limos)
of a top cabinet official.

The president may look at your qualifications and hire you
immediately.
Apparently the job was way too "hard" for the frat monkey from the
beginning. Being president is a hard job takes a lot of hard work, he
says. Looks like it takes some sort of informed and decisive
leadership that he clearly isn't capable of.
He's good when it comes to reading the script of lies they gave him.
Exciting to become a "war president". Turns out it's a lot tougher
than playing guns in the back yard. Harder than the vacation you had
from Vietnam flying in the Texas Air National Guard.

Except Bush isn't looking for a war czar, he's looking for someone to do
his dirty work (read: follow incredibly stupid and shortsighted, yet
self-serving orders) and take the blame for Bush's stupid/insane
decisions so that Bush can be left untouched. That's Bush's M.O.

This is one of those impossible to spin things.
I imagine it leaves our neocon brethren feeling cold and lonely.

Very true, but what the prez wouldn't understand is that it's far too
late in the game to make a scapegoat work.
Nice strategy, blame the Iraqis AND a former Marine Corp general for
your own incompetence. I think Karl Rove would have had to have
helped him with that.
