Winds beginning to strengthen across Vic
Winds have already begun to strengthen in Victoria's north and east,
where extreme conditions are expected to fuel raging bushfires.
The fires have so far burnt through 214,000 hectares of bushland and it
is feared they could burn up to 600,000 hectares in the coming days.
Firefighters and residents in the north-east and Gippsland have spent
the night preparing for today's onslaught.
Temperatures are expected to reach 40 degrees and the weather bureau's
Dean Stewart says northerly winds are strengthening.
"Mt Hotham and Falls Creek, they've already picked up to 20 to 30
kilometre-an-hour winds up there," he said.
Stuart Ord from the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE)
says time will tell how the weather will affect fire activity today.
"It will vary across the whole fire area. Some areas there will be
very, very unpredictable fire weather - especially as a change comes
through, it's coming through the west of the state," he said.
"When that change comes through then we can expect really unpredictable
fire behaviour."
Also from the DSE, Rachel May says Gippsland is facing the greatest
threat, with the towns of Licola, Dargo, Woods Point, Valencia Creek
and Briagolong on high alert.
"There is a real risk that those towns will be impacted by the fire and
embers today," she said.
She says those that are staying must be prepared.
"People do need, who are staying behind, to make sure that they're
properties are fully prepared and that they are mentally and physically
prepared for what may come today," she said.
"Wear appropriate clothing, make sure you've got water on hand, clear
out your gutters and understand that it can be quite a terrifying
experience if the fire does come towards your property."
In the north-east, Mount Buller, the King and Buckland valleys and the
towns of Tolmie and Jamieson are also under threat.
Dargo is preparing for the approaching fire, but winds are also
expected to push the blaze towards surrounding towns.
Many roads in the area are closed.
Residents are being asked to conserve electricity to ensure supplies
for sprinklers and water pumps in fire affected areas.
The state's west is not off the hook either.
There are storms in the area and authorities are concerned that
lightning strikes will spark new blazes.
Smoke haze
Authorities do not expect the thick smoke haze across much of the state
to improve until there is a change in weather conditions.
The haze is affecting visibility and causing some people to experience
breathing problems.
Paramedic Lindsay Bent says the best place to be is indoors.
"People who do have ongoing breathing problems, asthma, emphysema, any
other long-term breathing problem, where you can stay out of the smoky
atmosphere and stay indoors," he said.
"Take your medication as directed by your doctor and certainly summon
help if you feel that you are in trouble."
Grass fires
Firefighters say they are disgusted by the deliberate lighting of six
separate fires in Melbourne's north.
Grass and shrubs were set on fire along the Western Ring Road in
Glenroy at about midnight AEDT.
The fires joined up and threatened nearby homes, but crews managed to
contain them. Several fences were damaged.
Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board (MFB) Commander Wayne
Carlson is angered by the arson.
"Given the current conditions that we are experiencing in this city
where it's blanketed in smoke from much larger fires, it's absolute
insanity," he said.
"I can't understand why anybody would go and light fires in the way
they have to threaten people's houses and threaten their lives."
