New missiles hailed as region's most lethal
Defence Minister Robert Hill says Australia will have the "most
lethal" air combat capacity in the region when it acquires long-range,
cruise missiles.
Senator Hill announced the plan this morning but there is already
concern about the reaction of neighbouring nations, especially
Indonesia.
"Combined with the new air-to-air missiles and upgraded
precision-guided bombs, Australia's fighter jets will be the region's
most lethal capacity for air combat and strike operations," he said.
"The long range of these new missiles will reduce the risk to both
aircraft and crew by decreasing their exposure in a high threat
environment."
The missiles for the RAAF's FA-18s and P3 Orion maritime surveillance
planes will be able to strike a target 400 kilometres away and are
scheduled to be operational between 2007 and 2009.
They will replace the capability of the aging F1-11 strike bombers.
"It means that weapons can be dispatched further away from the
target," Senator Hill said.
The project will come at a cost of up to $450 million and mean
Australia is the first nation in the region to be armed with
long-range missiles.
The Labor Party says the Government's plan could cause friction among
neighbouring nations, especially Indonesia.
Opposition's defence spokesman Kim Beazley is concerned about
neighbouring nations' reaction to the move.
"The problem with this Government is that it never bothers to go
around the region and explain what it's doing and the unfortunate
thing is that it brings this into play at a time when there is
regional disagreement with our endorsing of national missile
defences," he said.

They really have not factored in demographics have they?
Look at the neighbours, 64 divisions to our little 4 and they have an
aircraft industry with Hawks, they must be quaking in their thongs!
