Families in despair as Russian hostage crisis drags on

Reports from Russia say as many as 13 people have been killed as a
result of the seizure of hundreds of hostages at a school in North
Ossetia.
The news agency ITAR-TASS says 12 of those killed are civilians.
At least 200 men, women and children remain trapped in a school
gymnasium, a day after suspected Chechen rebels stormed the school in
the town of Beslan.
Russian officials say they have resumed communications with the rebels
and the gunmen have finally agreed to allow in food and water.
Moscow correspondent Emma Griffiths, who is at the scene, says there
are 132 children inside the school gymnasium held hostage with their
parents and teachers.
"Some residents have told the ABC babies are also among the captives,"
she said.
"Outside, the extended families are enduring hours of waiting.
"There's very little information about any negotiations between
officials and rebels, but the sound of sporadic gunfire is only adding
to their despair.
"The hostage takers did cut off talks at 3:00am local time -
apparently they just switched off their mobiles.
"So those talks are under way. Now, apparently we do know that they
have managed to convince the hostage takers to allow food and water to
be brought into the school to be delivered and the regional government
is preparing a thousand sort of lunch box packets of food for the
people who are in the gymnasium."
In other developments:
The UN Security Council has issued a tough condemnation of the taking
of hundreds of hostages in a Russian school and demanded their
immediate release.
