US 'closing in' on Saddam
Five Iraqis are reported to have died in raids in Baghdad as the US
military steps up its hunt for Saddam Hussein.
The US military would only confirm that the raid had taken place but
refused to discuss whether there had been civilian casualties.
The Baghdad raid and others in Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit
come as US officials say they are tightening the noose on the deposed
dictator.
The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Richard Myers,
has arrived in Baghdad after visiting troops in Tikrit.
He says the deaths of Saddam's sons Uday and Qusay last week have led
to a flood of new informants.
"There's been a big spike in the number coming forward," he said.
"Fear ruled this country; you wouldn't dare come forward in the past
without fear that your children or some member would be tortured or
killed.
"As you remove elements of fear other things become possible," Gen
Myers said.
Matter of time
Gen Myers says while Saddam's capture may not be imminent, he is
confident of success. "In my opinion, if he's alive, it's just a
matter of time," he said.
"Our opinion is that he is not having a major effect on what's going
on. He's so busy just trying to survive. It's a big country but we'll
find him."
Apparently acting on the sort of tip-off that enabled troops to kill
Saddam's sons, squads from the Task Force 20 special unit leading the
hunt for Saddam sealed off part of Baghdad's smart Mansur district.
Residents and local doctors told Reuters that five people were killed
and eight wounded, some when troops opened fire on passing cars and
riddled them with bullets. They said those killed had no clear
connection to Saddam.
The force left the area quickly, suggesting no key finds.
A US soldier guarding a Baghdad hospital told Reuters five men,
including a teenager, were brought in dead from the Mansur raid.
"Today has been off the wall," he said.
Clashes
A US soldier was killed in a grenade attack during a night patrol
south of Baghdad on Sunday, the fifth to die from hostile fire in 24
hours.
US marines have opened fire during clashes with stone-throwing crowds
in the Shiite Muslim holy city of Kerbala. The clashes occurred after
a man was shot dead on Saturday.
Local people accused them of killing a second man on Sunday in a
reminder that tensions are not restricted to Saddam's Sunni Muslim
heartlands north and west of the capital.
Gen Myers flew in to visit US troops in Tikrit, where some of the
search for the dictator has been concentrated.
He declined to echo the hopes of other US commanders that Saddam's
sons' deaths would help stem the guerrilla-style attacks on US troops
that Washington blames on die-hard Saddam loyalists.
Ten US troops have been killed in attacks since Saddam's sons were
slain in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Tuesday. A total of 49
American soldiers have died from hostile fire since US President
George W Bush declared major combat in Iraq over on May 1.
"We're here to do the job," Gen Myers said of the 144,000 US troops in
Iraq. "We understand that there will be casualties. The soldiers
understand exactly what this is all about."
At the same time, a senior US General says Iraq is becoming a
"terrorist magnet" for foreign fighters seeking to attack Americans.
Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez, commander of US ground forces in
Iraq, said: "This is what I would call a terrorist magnet where
America, being present here in Iraq, creates a target of opportunity
if you will."
Gen Sanchez did not elaborate on the nationalities but said there was
no evidence any country was sponsoring them.
