Palestinians Say Abbas's Success Hinges on Israel
Palestinian Authority members said on Saturday Prime Minister Mahmoud
Abbas's visit to Washington appeared to be a success, but that peace
efforts hinged on Israel's commitment to them.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is due to meet President Bush on
Tuesday to discuss a U.S.-backed peace "road map" which envisages a
Palestinian state by 2005 and security for Israel.
Palestinian parliamentarian Saeb Erekat said the future of Abbas,
better known as Abu Mazen, after his first visit to Washington
depended on Israel's fulfillment of its commitments as specified in
the peace plan.
Legislators had threatened a confidence vote if Abbas failed to
convince Israel to pull out from most of the occupied West Bank and
Gaza Strip and if thousands of Palestinians were not released from
Israeli jails. The "road map" also calls on Israel to freeze Jewish
settlement construction on occupied land.
"I don't think Abu Mazen has a problem with the Palestinian
Legislative Council or the Palestinian people," Erekat told Reuters.
"His problem is with Israel's lack of implementation of the peace road
map."
Israeli government spokesman Avi Pazner told Reuters Sharon would
inform Bush in Washington of goodwill gestures he said his government
was implementing to ease Palestinians' lives.
"At the same time Sharon will insist...that the Palestinian Authority
has to fulfil its obligations under the road map to all that relates
to the dismantling of the terrorist organizations," he said.
Erekat said the few steps taken by Israel so far were "cosmetic."
Abbas held talks on Friday with Bush who pledged to expand
U.S.-Palestinian economic ties, repeated U.S. opposition to Jewish
settlements built on land Israel occupied in the 1967 Middle East war
and criticized Israel's construction of a security fence in the West
Bank.
Bush also said he did not endorse a blanket release of some 6,000
Palestinians held in Israeli prisons, a key Palestinian demand, and
said Abbas must crack down on Palestinian militants.
PALESTINIANS DIVIDED OVER VISIT
Islamic militants, who called a three-month cease-fire in June to
allow Abbas to move forward with the "road map," said Bush's remarks
showed the United States remained biased toward Israel.
"When Bush spoke about our prisoners and said our fighters were
killers, he sounded just like Sharon," Mohammed al-Hindi, a spokesman
for the militant Islamic Jihad group told Reuters.
"This visit proves that the American position is still to support only
Sharon," Hamas leader Abdel-Aziz al-Rantissi said. "We did not expect
any good results from this visit because the United States does not
care about our hopes and our goals."
The militants have accused Abbas of capitulating to Israel and the
moderate prime minister is struggling to bolster his standing at home.
University Student Salwa Abu Sulum, 20, from Gaza said she was
"satisfied with Abu Mazen's White House visit."
But Hassan Abed Rabbo, an employee in the West Bank city of Bethlehem,
said if Bush failed to press Sharon to free Palestinian prisoners and
to pull out of Palestinian occupied lands, then Abbas's visit to
Washington was "merely a public relations exercise." (Additional
