Al Jazeera broadcasts 'Saddam tape'
A voice thought to be Saddam Hussein has appeared on an Arabic
television station urging Iraqis to continue their resistance to
United States troops.
The recording emerged last night shortly after 11 Iraqis were shot
dead in what is being described as an attempted ambush north of
Baghdad.
The Arab cable TV network Al Jazeera says experts, including a former
Iraqi intelligence chief, have verified the voice on the tape is of
Saddam Hussein.
The station says the tape was recorded about three weeks ago and in it
the former Iraqi leader says he is alive and well and living with his
aides inside Iraq.
He purportedly praises his followers for their sacrifices, telling
them cells of Iraqi fighters have been formed to repel the US-led
invaders.
The voice on the tape also warns the campaign against US forces will
intensify in coming days.
"In the next days it'll be even more difficult on the invaders and
even more honourable to the believers," the voice said.
"Therefore I encourage you to cover on the Mujahadeen and our heroes
and not give the invaders and their conspirators any information on
the Mujahadeen and their activities."
Meanwhile, a group of Iraqis armed with rocket-propelled grenades
attempted to ambush a US patrol near Balad north of Baghdad.
The soldiers returned fire killing at least 11 of the attackers.
