Abbas submits resignation from key post, Mideast peace process in
crisis

Palestinian prime minister Mahmud Abbas offered to resign from a key
leadership post and called off a meeting with his Israeli counterpart
Ariel Sharon in a dispute over prisoner releases which plunged the
peace process into a new crisis.
The peace process had already suffered a blow earlier when a local
branch of Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for a deadly bombing in
northern Israel, in the most significant breach of a truce declared by
several Palestinian militant groups.
Abbas submitted his resignation from the central committee of Yasser
Arafat's mainstream Fatah party in a letter to the veteran Palestinian
leader, a senior Fatah official and committee member told AFP, but it
was unanimously rejected.
In a separate letter to the central committee, the prime minister
challenged the organisation to outline a different policy toward the
Israeli government and said he was ready to step down if his own line
was at fault.
The resignation offer followed a stormy meeting of the Palestinian
leadership in the West Bank town of Ramallah late Monday at which
Abbas came under fire over his contacts with Israel, especially on the
issue of prisoner releases.
As a result, Abbas, who is also known by his nom de guerre of Abu
Mazen, postponed a scheduled meeting on Wednesday with Sharon.
"If Abu Mazen were to resign, that would be the result of Israeli
pressure because he secured a ceasefire, whereas Israel seems to want
to provoke a (Palestinian) civil war," said Sakher Habash, a fellow
member of Fatah's central committee.
Abbas and Arafat were co-founders of Fatah in 1965.
A statement obtained by AFP said the Ramallah meeting had agreed that
all Palestinian prisoners, around 6,000 detainees, must be released
unconditionally following the ceasefire by Palestinian militants.
Sources said members of the leadership expressed dismay about Abbas'
moderate approach on the issue.
Palestinian ministers have been angered by an Israeli government
decision Sunday to pave the way for the release of just 350
Palestinian prisoners, representing little more than five percent of
those currently in detention.
Israel's cabinet laid down strict criteria for the releases
effectively ruling out anyone from the hardline groups Hamas and
Islamic Jihad, which on June 29 called a three-month halt to
anti-Israeli attacks.
Sources close to Abbas confirmed he pulled out of the Sharon summit
after coming under fire from fellow Palestinian leaders over the
prisoner issue. The Israelis also confirmed it had been called off,
but claimed to not know why.
The meeting would have been Sharon and Abbas' second round of talks in
eight days, a period of rising hopes of progress for the US-backed
roadmap peace plan which aims to bring an end to the decades-long
conflict.
Its cancellation followed a meeting of senior Palestinian officials in
the West Bank town of Ramallah late Monday, chaired by Arafat and
attended by Abbas which demanded all Palestinian prisoners be set
free.
A ceasefire which several Palestinian militant groups recently
declared was also breached on Monday in an explosion in Kfar Yabetz
village near Tel Aviv which killed a 65-year-old woman named Mazal
Afari.
The leadership of Islamic Jihad, however, later insisted it remained
committed to the truce.
The militant groups have said that their truce is conditional on,
among other things, the release of all Palestinian prisoners, and the
local Islamic Jihad spokesman said Israel's failure to comply had
sparked the attack.
Brigadier General Avi Biran, the officer leading the investigation
into the blast said he believed the attack was the work of a suicide
bomber.
Afari's niece said that locals believed the bomber had been planning
to attack a synagogue in the village.
Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said after the attack that the
government would continue attempts to try to dismantle the
infrastructure of Islamic Jihad, but remained committed to the peace
process.
"We are however determined to continue the peace process while
ensuring the security of the citizens of Israel," Mofaz told public
radio.
On the diplomatic front, the US Middle East envoy John Wolf met in
Jerusalem with Israeli Foreign Minister Sylvan Shalom, public
television said, and urged the Israelis to release more Palestinian
prisoners and dismantle more wildcat Jewish settlements.
Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and his French counterpart
Dominique de Villepin at a meeting in Moscow also called for an
international conference to be held on the Middle East peace process.

The terrorists never can be trusted. Who ever thought of dealing with
these assholes?

Blow them up before they have a chance to kill innocents!!!

J.

I wouldn't blame Abbas for wanting out of his job -- an extremely
difficult, stressful and frustrating one...
