Israel closes Gaza highway after attacks
Israel has closed the north-south highway in the Gaza Strip to
Palestinian traffic, after militants fired anti-tank missiles at a
Jewish settlement, witnesses say.
A Reuters correspondent on the scene says Israeli army jeeps and
cement barriers have blocked Palestinian vehicles from travelling
freely.
The clampdown reverses a move that this week re-opened Gaza's central
artery to Palestinians after two-and-a-half years.
An Israeli military source said the road would be shut for three
hours.
Investigations are underway into the firing of anti-tank rockets from
a Palestinian town in Gaza which landed in the central Gaza settlement
of Kfar Darom.
The rockets, with a range of half a kilometre, were developed by Hamas
militants but may have been transferred to members of another militant
group.
In a separate incident, Israeli security forces have shot dead a
suspected Palestinian militant in the West Bank while attempting to
arrest him.
Israeli radio says Mahmoud Shawar, a local head of the hardline al
Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, was killed during an exchange of fire in the
town of Qalqilya.
Israeli troops also arrested 15 Palestinians throughout the West Bank.
