Hamas claims Rosh Ha'ayin blast, IDF blames Fatah for Ariel
Ariel blast was a revenge attack for last week's Israeli raid in Nablus

Sharon holding security consultations on Tuesday's suicide bombings

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was holding security
consultations Wednesday morning with Defense
Minister Shaul Mofaz and the heads of the defense
establishment regarding the two suicide bombings
carried out in Rosh Ha'ayin and Ariel on Tuesday,
in which two people were killed.

Israel is not planning a
military response to Tuesday's
attacks, but will step up
pressure on the Palestinian
Authority to dismantle
terrorist infrastructure.
The bombings prompted Sharon to
halt a prisoner release
underway on Tuesday. A

well-informed source in Jerusalem said that the
defense establishment would erect more
roadblocks in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, and
would make the passage of Palestinian workers
into Israel more difficult.
The first blast occurred at around 9 A.M. in the
town of Rosh Ha'ayin, on the outskirts of Petah
Tikva, killing 42-year-old Yehezkel Yekutiel,
and a second followed within an hour at the
entrance to the West Bank settlement of Ariel,
killing 18-year-old Erez Hershkovitz.
Several Israelis have been killed since a
temporary cease-fire was declared by militant
groups on June 29, but Tuesday's attacks were
considered the first major puncturing of the
truce, which has led to a dramatic decline in
violence.
The Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, the armed wing of
Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement, claimed
responsibility for the Rosh Ha'ayin bombing in
a Web site announcement, naming the bomber as
Islam Yousef Qteishat, 17.
Security sources said they thought the Rosh
Ha'ayin attack was carried out by Fatah
activists from Nablus, whom IDF Chief of Staff
Moshe Ya'alon called "Fatah renegades."
Hamas, which told the Hezbollah television
station in Lebanon that one of its activists,
17-year-old Khamis Ghazi Gerwan, carried out
the Ariel attack, claimed that it was revenge
for last week's Israeli raid in Nablus, in
which two top Hamas figures and an IDF soldier
were killed.
But security sources said the bombings would
require more planning than the four days since
the raid, and were not related to any IDF
operation. The IDF claimed Tuesday that it
found a photograph of the Ariel junction where
the suicide bomber struck in the home of a
Hamas activist killed in a raid on Friday.
Military sources said that the discovery proves
that the junction was a Hamas target even
before the raid.
Mahmoud A-Zahar, a Hamas leader in the Gaza
Strip, said his organization would continue its
commitment to the cease-fire - despite
Tuesday's violation of it - if Israel fulfills
its obligations.
PM blames Abbas' inaction over terror groups for
suicide bombings
Sharon accused his Palestinian counterpart
Tuesday evening of not doing enough to clamp
down on terrorists, and thereby allowing two
Nablus teenagers to carry out Tuesday's suicide
bombings.
Speaking to a group of several hundred Jewish
youths from overseas, Sharon said that
Palestinian PM Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) had
reneged on his commitment to act against the
terror groups operating in the West Bank and
Gaza Strip.
"Israel won't be able to continue the [peace]
process, despite its strong desire, if
terrorism does not cease completely and the
Palestinian Authority does not fulfill all its
commitments," said Sharon. "Israel will
continue to strike at terrorists if the PA does
not," he added.
Earlier in the day, Sharon warned that the
political process would not continue if
Palestinian "terror does not stop."
Abbas condemned the attacks and denounced the
almost daily Israeli raids in Palestinian
areas, which he said provoked the bombings.
U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell later
dismissed claims that the attacks were sparked
by IDF raids as "excuses."
Police have determined that there was no direct
link between the two attacks other than that
both bombers came from Nablus, police commander
Harel Knafo, who is in charge of the Nablus
area, said at a press conference.
"There is no connection between them," he said.
"It's not the same organization. It
coincidentally happened more or less at the
same time."
Nonetheless, the security establishment was
checking whether there was in fact some
coordination, since the composition of the
explosives used in both bombings was similar.
There have been reports recently on cooperation
between Hamas and Tanzim (which is affiliated
with Fatah) in Nablus: Hamas members were
manufacturing explosive belts and selling them
to the Tanzim.
Hamas and Islamic Jihad spokesmen both said
earlier they didn't know who was responsible
for the attacks and that they were committed to
the cease-fire.
Ismail Hanieh, a spokesman for Hamas, laid the
blame for the attacks at Israel's feet, saying,
"This situation was born as a result of
Israel's refusal to commit to the Palestinian
hudna."
A short time before the Rosh Ha'ayin blast,
police had gone on high alert in the Sharon
region due to reports of a terrorist having
infiltrated the area. A Palestinian security
source said the Palestinian Authority had
warned Israel about the terror attacks, Channel
10 reported.
IDF demolishes Nablus home of Rosh Ha'ayin
suicide bomber
Israel Defense Forces troops demolished
overnight Tuesday the home of the terrorist who
carried out a deadly suicide bombing in the
town of Rosh Ha'ayin earlier in the day.
Troops moved into the Askar refugee camp in
Nablus late Tuesday night, and razed the
building. IDF sources said that the policy of
demolishing the home of terrorists is part on
an ongoing strategy, and that future attacks
would meet a similar response.
Seven people were arrested during the
demolition. Israel Radio reported that four
Palestinians had also been arrested in other
parts of the West Bank, for allegedly planning
to carry out suicide bombings.
Islam Yousef Qteishat blew himself up in a
supermarket in Rosh Ha'ayin, located close to
the Green Line border with the West Bank,
killing Yehezkel Yekutiel and wounding around
10 others.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will meet
some time this week with his Palestinian
counterpart, Mahmoud Abbas, Israel Radio
reported. Abbas cut short his visit to the Gulf
States on hearing of the bombings. The radio
said that a meeting had been agreed, but that
the exact date has not yet been finalized.
