Saddam Hussein's sons likely killed in US raid in northern Iraq

The two sons of Saddam Hussein may have been killed in a major US
military raid in northern Iraq, a US official and residents said, in
what would be a major coup for coalition forces pursuing the family of
the toppled Iraqi ruler and his loyalists.
"We can't rule it out, we are expecting identification," the official
said.
Relatives of the homeowner in the city of Mosul and local officials
also said they believed the bodies of Uday and Qusay were pulled from
the house bombed by US forces.
Owner Nawaf al-Zaidan "is believed to have informed US forces that
Saddam's sons Uday and Qusay, Qusay's son, and a bodyguard named Abdul
Samad took refuge in his house and he wanted to get rid of them", said
a female relative of Zaidan who asked not to be named.
The relative and other residents of the area said US helicopter
gunships fired at the house after clashes broke out when US forces
tried to go in to arrest those inside.
Four charred bodies, believed to include those of Qusay, the "ace of
clubs" on the US "most wanted list" of the former Iraqi regime, and
Uday, the "ace of hearts", were taken out of the house, relatives of
Zaidan said.
Mosul deputy governor Khasrow Guran later told AFP that US forces were
now trying to identify the four charred bodies. Two of the dead were
bearded, he said, adding that US forces believed Uday and Qusay were
among the four dead.
Guran said four US soldiers were also wounded during the operation.
Sadi Ahmad Pire, the top official in Mosul for the Patriotic Union of
Kurdistan (PUK), also said the PUK official in the locality where the
raid took place had told him US forces on the ground believed Uday and
Qusay had been killed along with an undetermined number of other
people.
CNN television quoted an unnamed US official as saying that the
government was reasonably certain that Uday and Qusay Hussein had "met
their maker".
Another US official told AFP that it was "too early to speculate"
about the identities of the men.
A resident in Mosul said a five-hour firefight broke out at the house
at 10 am (0600 GMT).
"Helicopters participated in the raid and they fired several missiles
into the house," a resident told AFP, asking not to be identified.
Other witnesses told AFP in Baghdad that Zaidan, a sheikh of the Bu
Issa tribe, and his son were arrested at the end of a six-hour battle
in which US helicopters fired more than 20 missiles, wrecking the
house and neighbouring buildings.
In Washington, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said he could not
confirm reports of Uday and Qusay's deaths.
The United States earlier this month announced a reward of 15 million
dollars for information leading to the capture or death of the Hussein
sons, while a 25-million-dollar reward was offered for Saddam, whose
fate has been unknown since he was toppled by US-British forces in
April.
If the sons are positively identified, it would mark the biggest
victory in the US-led coalition's hunt for Saddam, his family and
former regime loyalists since the war was declared over May 1.
At least 39 US soldiers have been killed since then, according to the
US military, and 153 killed in combat during the entire Iraq campaign.
US Central Command said the latest death of a US soldier came in an
ambush at around 9:00 am (0500 GMT) Tuesday on the road between Balad
and Ramadi, 100 kilometres (60 miles) west of Baghdad.
Hours ahead of the deadly attack in Mosul, attention had shifted
Tuesday to the United Nations, where members of Iraq's 25-strong
Governing Council were seeking to win credibility and aid for
rebuilding.
With UN Secretary General Kofi Annan urging an early end to the
military occupation of Iraq, the council presented Tuesday its
post-war vision to the UN Security Council and asked for its aid.
Laying out plans for a swift transition to a free and democratically
elected Iraqi government, the head of a three-member council
delegation, Adnan Pachachi, stressed the urgency of restoring law and
order and of rapid political, economic and social reconstruction.
"Our participation in this meeting is considered by the Iraqi people
as a clear and express recognition of the sovereignty of Iraq," he
added.
The council's honeymoon ended after barely one week as both Sunni and
Shiite clerics heaped scorn on the body in sermons last Friday,
denouncing it as illegitimate and hand-picked by the Americans.
